Why???
o, so glad you asked!

okay, back in the oldern dayz, those crazy ol romans pretty much ruled most of europe and the such, the empire was pretty freaking big.
well, those broom headed guys were always ridin around on chariots, or moving something in some kind of cart.
well, mostly they were moved by 2 horses.
and, well, over the 5 gazillion years of so of roman rule, the roads developed these ruts
as time went on, those same roads across the lands over there, became more or less modern day rail beds, as the train was invented whenever that was, i got to take a ride in the wayback machine to comfirm the date, but you get the idea.

so, modern rail ways were laid in the same ruts from those horse drawn carts/chariots, and if believe the distance is like 54 1/2" center to center of the rails, i could be wrong on the measurement, but you get the picture.

so, when railroads got big here in the 1800's, the technology was pretty much from europe, and, well, that is why the size of the shuttles main booster tank, a part of the most technology advanced piece or hardware known to man kind, is based on the width of ruts from over 3 thousand years ago, which were based upon the size of 2 horses *** next to each other.

feel free to corect me on any of this. i learned it a long time ago
o, and for that one person that is going to corect me by stating that snopes says its false, well, snopes is not always right, i believe it, so it must be true, SO THERE!

I believe the jiffy stand being on the left on Harleys and most all other brands of bikes stems from mounting a horse from the left side. Most folks get on thier bike from the left with the notable exception of LEO's. It is easier to mount a bike from the low side therefore the jiffy stand was placed on the left side of most bikes. Ya think???

Good try acid, but see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_gauge. Rail gauge is not even a standard in most countries, let alone a standard distance all around the world, so it throws out the "two horse concept" cause railway gauge varies widely.

But If the LEO's got off the right side of the bikes when they pulled someone over, they would'nt be prone to step out In the traffic lane of motorists. Is this not correct???

The shoulder of the road slopes down.....These damn Harleys lean bad enough to the left. They'd roll over if the jiffy stand was on the right!

Below the Equator they are on the right side?. Everthing leans the other way.

Think about this, how would we check the oil?
