How do you get it clean and remove the moisture? Is this under warranty?
I have been riding 43 years and I do not remember ever having this problem before. could have just might not remember.
My selling dealership said that it was normal because the gauges are vented to the atmosphere; however, they would replace them once under warranty if I insisted; I insisted. I would inquire and insist.
Thanks guys
I haven't been in any rain- some very slight going to the dealer about 5 days ago and this morning I couldn't hardley see the tac or speedo. That sucks
guess I will need to adjust my thinking and just live with it in case they will not do anything
Doesn't take much moisture to get those babies to fog. With the exception of my 83 V65 Magna, every bike I've ever owned has had guages that fog. I don't even pay it any attention anymore.
I told my dealership that my speedo was jumping around then would go to Zero. But only did it every once in a while as most of the time it was OK. I said that it had water in it, could that be it?? They said no, that's normal.
Took the bike in anyway for them to look at it for the jumping around. They said they couldn't duplicate the problem and the tech said it had to be the speedo because the speed sensor was fine... They ordered me a new one and installed it when it came from the factory preset with the miles. I didn't push an issue with the water.
I removed it and put a small trace of silicone under the bottom chrome lip and even a smaller one on the glass at the chrome edging. Took lots of patience to do so. Now that won't help much with fogging but it will stop direct water from rain or water hose. Fogging is caused by temperature changes such as heat of the motor reaches the cool speedo glass. If it is a hermetically sealed unit the fog wouldn't dry and the glass would turn milk white.
The way I look at it the only way to stop fog/condensation would be to have a liquid filled gauge or vacuum sealed unit. But what do we engineers know anyway. Piffft...
Moisture in these gauges isn't the real problem - it's the residue left after the moisture evaporates - kind of makes an oil type stain which will be visible under certain light conditions. My $19,000 BMW did the same thing - only affected the tach (they did replace it). The Road King developed the stain after about 3 months. Harley's position is - if you can read it, live with it. So far, none of the gauges on my current ride have fogged or developed any interior stains. Btw, heading to Arkansas (Hot Springs) Thursday (1000+ miles) - monitoring channel 1 (CB) - give me a shout if you see me - silver GL1800. I-81 S to I-70W to I-68W to I-79S to I-64W.
My speedo used to fog once in a great while, but now every time I ride it fogs. And the wost part is, of course, that it fogs at the bottom right over my trip mileage. It's a fricken pain in the azz to have to try to look around and over"the fog" to see what it says. I haven't called the dealer yet because I'm sure I'll get the "that'snormal" and have them spend a week with thebike even if they would replace it.
You mean to tell me that in 43 years of riding you haven't ever rode in the rain before?? Or washed your bike and noticed itafter words??? Mine has done this from Day one, and so did my softail, I don't really have a problem with it. It just adds alittle more character.....
