relli, here's a really good, easy to understand article from Joe Minton from American Rider magazine, explaining one of the simple "black boxes" you can buy, in this case, a Cobra.

http://www.americanrider.com/output.cfm?id=1291411

You can control idle/cruise, mid range, and wide open fuel settings, just like the old carbs where you had jets and needles that you could change. The bike's stock ECM is still used.

The more sophisticated ones give you multiple settings in each category, and may or may not replace the stock ECM, and may allow you to also control such things as timing, and even calibrate your electronic speedometer.

www.fuelmotousa.com will pre-program a PCIII for your specific combo & double the warranty. Good prices with customer service. They also offer exhaust/air filter packages. Fuel Moto is the USA's #1 Top selling Power Commander Dealer and tuner!
I have to agree with Donny, When preloaded by Jamie you will have a s close a map as you can get with out being dyno`ed. You would not have to do anything but install. About a 20 minute job. BUT should you later decide to play with the map it is completely adjustable and very easyto do once you understand how it works. Bottom line is you get the best of both worlds.

Ride Safe,

Mike

The PCIII on my bike works great. I have heard good things about the V&H fuelpak as far as reliability. I also know that it's mount is way better than the cheezy wire tie method that you have to use on the PCIII. Believe me, it really sucks.

If I had to do it over again . . . V&H.

If I had the $$$$ - ThunderMax

If I had a dyno to use for cheap . . . SERT (maybe)

What I have . . . PCIII

They all work. Hope this helps you pick one.

Can onyone back me up on this or am I FOS??? Let me know guys.
Steve
Not sure if I'd say you are FOS but...

Why would you do the V&H before the PCIII...its my understanding that you are not able to manipulate the timing on the fule pack....but you definitely can on the PCIII...this could be important should you begin to build you beast. I needed to retard timing on mine in certain areas to get rid of detonation. I'm not saying its the best product but I want control over a/f & TIMING.

this whole fuel management thing confuses me.if you take the approach that ive never had any exp with one , which one would be: the easiest, simplest one to use and install? are most plug and play? reliable?slip ons, exhausts, a/c pose no problems for me. but ive never done anything like a fuel mod. thanks

oh yeah. i still havent had the 0903 / 1191 fuel related computer flashes done yet. do them first???
Definitely do the 0903...unless you don't care about your warranty. Not sure about the other one....if it is the one that shuts down one cylander for heat management....that's up to you....its not one that you are required to have.

From what I have heard the Arlen Ness Big Shot is the Cobra repackaged. Thats what I went with it was cheapest and the easiest. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. It seems only to add fuel in the selected ranges. I get alot off decell popping. I asked the guys at Arlen Ness here in town they told me that "you need to mess with it". I have and don't see much if any difference from one end of the scale to the other.
I wish I would have waited and saved longer for at least the fuel pac.

thanks guys. im gonna run the Wild Pigs pipes (slip ons ) i think. and will need to resaerch an air filt kit (any suggestions???) . i wanna keep the OE filter housing intact if possible??

BTW im noticing all kinds of diff size baffles for the same pipes. i assume a 1.75 is louder than a 2.5 for example? bigger the baffle the quieter?? THANKS again. really appreciate all this help.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you have that backwards. The size of the baffle relates to the center opening, hence a 1.75" inch opening has more packing than one with 2.5" and is quieter.

Hhhhmmmm!! HD Dealer and one SERT.

Purchase SERT = $500
6 hours on Dyno @$85 an hour = $510.00

Total $1,010.00

Maybe easy, but certainly not one of the cheaper ways to go.

For a simple upgrade I would second the V&H Fuel Pak. About a quarter of the price.

I just ordered the Ness Big Sucker Stage 1, Power Comander from Jamie at Fuelmoto with pre loaded map, I have Rush slip ons with 1.75 baffle. I believe this to be the best bang for the buck combo for me. There are lots of good options. I did a lot of research and went with what I feel comfortable. Do a search on here and read and read and read. Lots of good info here to make an informed decision.

With the Big Sucker you can use the stock oval filter cover. Bigger the baffle diameterthe more noise. With Rush the 1.5 is the quietest and 2.5 is the loudest.

Hope this helps. I know it is confussing at times
