I've already searched the forum for answers, but wasn't able to find any so I thought I'd ask you guys who have had bikes for awhile. At what mileage do typical touring bikes start having problems?I'm looking at a used 06 Street Glide with around 25,000 miles and was wondering when I would probably have to start making repairs.
Question, was the '06 bought in '05? Just seems like alot of miles for an '06 unless your someplace with nice weather all of the time. I live in NJ and bought my '05 in '05 and ride year round and it has 30,000 miles on it. Either way, it would have to be alot of highway riding to put those miles on itin a year and that ain't hurting it a bit. 25,000 miles isn't alot as long as it was maintained correctly. Should still be under warranty for another year, right? If the price is right, go for it. Have it dealer serviced after you buy it unless you feel good about doing it yourself. My two cents worth for free.
I have 25,000 o mine and just changed my bike over to gear drive and new cams, I am glad I did as it was ready for new cam tensioners and was getting a rattle sound when you left off of it at times....Jer
The only real thing to be concerned with is the condition of the tensioners. They are due to be checked. My Twin Cam has 69k on it and hasn't given me any trouble. Itookoutthe original tensioners at 52k miles.
I believe you wanted to know what be need looking at, if so here goes: First take a look at the cam tensioners, secondly between 20-40,000 miles is when the inner cam bearing can give you trouble. While you ar checking the above you can check your crank for run out. occaisionally the stator can give you trouble. Other than that it's routine maintenance. Hope this is what you were looking for.
I've been very impressed with how reliable my '05 Electra Glide has been. My bike originally was my Dad's first. He bought it new in Sept '04 and put 35,000 on it before it came into my hands. It now has 67,000 on it and is running like a champ.
At 20,000 my dad had the95" /Stage II kit done to it and new cam shoes. Nothing's been done to it and had no probs in this last 47,000 since the build. I'm due to check the cam shoes again now, but when i checked them about 20,000 miles ago they looked like new.
