Default question about throttle by wire

With the throttle by wire there is no doubt a throttle positioning sensor. I know with certain automobiles if the battery goes completely dead or you disconnect the battery withoutusing a keep alive the TPS has to be reset. Curious how it is with the Harley?? Anyone know??

I've unhooked my battery and didn't do anything special when I rehooked it up.

ok great, that would really suck if you had to take it back to the dealer to reset.

Dawg, nice ride. What did you do with your old ride? Did you get the 103 on the new bike?

Thanks. I traded it on this one. I didn't get the 103, but will be doing a whole build again for this one.

I have pulled the battery anddisconnnected the throttle-by-wire harness so I couldinstall heatedgrips - no problem, fired it right up and went for a ride with warm hands.

As a general rule of thumb.
While cranking the engine you need 9 volts during crank to also start the motor
Most computer systems operate at 5 volts with some today down to 1.5 volts for some controls (automotive)
Haven't read up yet on the HD TBW voltage requirements.
But yep, battery dies you will lose throttle control but then your ECM will shut down anyway. Alternator will handle the load, but probably not for long
Most FI systems have a limp home mode. If a sensor fails (tps, O2, CKS, TPS etc)but engine keeps running, you can limp home or to the nearest safe stopping point.
Course if the TBW fails you will most likely be stranded wherever you're at

Default RE: question about throttle by wire

About the second week I owned my bike (stock) I lost throttle control. I could idle and rev no higher than 1100 rpm. Dealer could not make sense of the codes because they did not have the updates for the 08's back in August. They called their tech people and were told to check the TPS pin that plugs in to the ecm. Theysaid some were not pushed in all the way (at the factory) to lock it in, this fixed it. Just though I'd share that with you sorry if its a repeat.

Hey Nedster.....I was just curious as to what grips you installed. I know the MOCO has a few models out, but I would like to install the Aileron grips like on my Screaming Eagle Deuce, and I dont think they have them for the 08's with ETC yet. Its definitely not the same hook up and the grips for 07's will not fit 08's.

Also in response to the original question, not all vehicles that use a TPS will need reseting of the sensor after a no voltage issue. For example Ford trucks do not need to be reset....nor do the ETC equipped 08' HD's.

Default RE: question about throttle by wire

Coming from an auto parts background originally, I've sold hundreds of TPS' in the past and most of the time the TPS did not have to be reset on a power loss. Most had a set resistance default and were adjusted at installation. After that, there was nothing to do. Usually, it was some of the codes in the ECM that had to be cleared. However, the detroit boys figured a long time ago to make EFI acceptable, they could not have a system that had to be brought in to the dealer every time a battery failed.
