Spoke with Evel this summer in Butte...Also met his Brother Nick at the motel we were staying he said he was in town to see Evel as they hadn't seen each other in a few years...said he didn't know that either of them would be around much longer guess he knew something......RIP Evel..
Gosh I don't even know what to say. What a hero he was when I was a kid (I'm 44 now). As a kid for years I remember his jumps on TV and of course as kids we'd have our little plywood jump/ramps out in front of the house that we'd sail off of on our Stingrays (as someone mentioned above,so my buddies and I weren't the only ones, lol...)
He was certainly a colorful character and lived his life to the wildest extremes in many ways. I can't remember how it's worded at the moment but one of our forum members has it as his signature - but it's about living life to the very end and skidding into home plate at the end exhaused and worn out and shouting "what a ride!". I'd wager there are few people whom that quote better fits...
I saw a biography channel program on Evel's lifejust recently and wow it was fascinating. He did those jumps on a stock bike! Not all tricked out, etc. He wore what we'd todaydescribe asfeeble levels of protective gear considering what he was doing - simple leather jump suit and full face helmet with gloves. He'd hit that ramp at 80 mph and WOW what a ride that must have been...
I remember jumping trash cans on my stingray bicycle after seeing him jump on TV when I was like 9. Which turned into jumping crap on my briggs and stranton mini bike to yamaha dirt bikes to one seriously fu&* knee. Wouldn't change it for nothing. Go Evel, God bless all you, yourfamily and fans.
He was definately one of my idols as a young kid and probably the biggest influence in my love for Harley's. Ever since watching him as a kid I kept saying to myself that one day I will own a Harley too. Well I have been riding Harleys now since 1993 and I am on my fourth bike.
Thanks Evel for all the great times and all the great memories. Have a great ride!
