I have been eyeing the Busa's also. $12,000 for the top dog in Suzuki's line up vs. $8,000 for HD's cheapest. Have you seen the black and orange Busa?

Well we are very close to 12/7/2007!!
The original date that will live in infamy!!
December 7, 1941 When Japan deliberately made a sneak attack on us.
That's one day we should remember even more then 9 /11.
Japan could not beat us then with military and technology.
even though they officially surrendered on paper, they have NOT stopped
trying to defeat us. Now it is financially and cheap goods.
It wasn't just HD in the 70's that requested higher tariffs.
all the auto makers wanted them.
so to get around those tariffs Japan started building factories here in the U.S.
But where do all the profits end up?? You got it back at headquarters in Japan!!
It is almost impossible today to find anything made strictly in the U.S.
Even American electronics are made overseas and thats one thing we all use a lot of.
My tools and my furniture are USA as much as possible.
My truck is an 87 chevy, mostly USA.
when I need to call a tech line if they don't speak english naturally I push for someone who does.
and I write complaints about push 1 for English.
Nothing against them, except I had relatives in Pearl Harbor that died that day, so no I don't trust them and I sure as hell won't forgive them!!

Uhm... close but no cigar.

Japan is in to long-term viability, wealth and financial power. They do not seek to dominate the world. If it's global domination you fear, look to China. That's where the US should be spending more time and energy. HSBC Bank which under-writes FAR TOO MANY LOANS here in the US is something like 70% owned by the CHINESE GOVERNMENT. Do you *REALLY* want all that money going to the Chinese Government? Trust me, between Iran, China, Pakistan a few other trouble makers around the globe, I would *WELCOME* more Japanese involvement in the US if we have to look outside our borders for anything.

(note, this is not an anti-Chinese point of view, this is an anti-Chinese-Government point of view)

As for your WWII reference, come on... get over it. We also killed a **** ton of Englishmen once, too. And Germans. I'm of German descent. Should I just go ahead and ship out now? Get out of your country? 'Cause unless you're "Native American" Cherokee, Sioux, Apache, etc., chances are you came from somewhere that people had a beef with at some point.

Ya know?

The tariff was only on bikes over 1000 cc. if I remember correctly. Thats why Honda moved assembly of the Goldwings to the US.
Actually it was 750ccs and up... That's the reason for all the 700cc bikes back then... Japan came out with 700cc models to replace all the 750 models in order to stay under the tariff levels... Those 700s sold well too...

Wow, this is always a topic that still creates highly emotional "discussion".HD does outsource a lot of parts overseas and they do so for numerousreasons with quality, availability, and cost being just a few. I don't particularly like seeing all the made in China labels when I pull the fairing skin on my '05 RoadGlide. The nature of the world ecomomy today is it takes a world to make a complex productlike a motorcycle. It is hypocritical to knock other bikes on the basis of a product being "all american". You can make the same arguement when comparing Fords and Chevys to Toyotas and Mazdas.

The bottom line for me as a person who has ridden HDs for the past 34 years as well as some other bikes is that if you are a Harley person (which I became the day I rode the first XLCH away from picking it up at the HD dealer) or you're not. If you are thenthe bike stirs your soul and the others don't quite cut it. It's not about resale, all american, technology, plastic vs. metal, all that is something to debate and maybe otherwise justify a purchase (so is $3.50 a gallon gas) but if you're a HD person all that don't matter much. It's how you feel when you're putting down a nice country road on a sunny day listening to the primal beat of that Milwaukee V-twin that still has elements of that great invention of William S. Harley and three Davidsons, that has changed our lives forever.

Asmodeus, I was in Japan at the time and the 700cc bikes were produced to stay under the 750 limit in Japan. The sales taxes and registration fees were a huge jump for 750 and over there. To the best of my knowledge the 700s were only sold in Japan. The 750s were all exported.

Chornbe....you're right my mistake. Actually the Japanese bike makers tried to help HD out, but HD turned down the offer assuming they would get tariff protection. Check the following like if you want all the details.....I stand my my statement the AMF was the cause of HD nearly going bankrupt, comments to that effect also noted in the link. http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa032.html The family buying the company back in the early 80s, along with tariff protection is what saved the MoCo.
One thing that the very one sided link above forgets to mention is that in 1987 Harley had made such a turn around that they petitioned the International Trade Commision to end the tarrif early because it was no longer needed.

Correct, they even had Ronald Reagan visiting the York plant on the 6 o'clock news. Smart move for free publicity about their improved product and no need to contine the tariff on bikes 750 cc and over. Many 700 cc bikes found their way to our shores during this period. These 700s were appropriately called "tariff beaters".
