I have an 06 Classic. Lately the left side of the faring has developed an intense vibration at about 1100 rpm. I tightened all the torx screws, but it did not help. The dealer advised me that the brace had probably broken, and it is not an uncommon problem. Of course the warranty is out on it. It seems to me that the weakness of the faring braces is some what of a Mickey Mouse set up, and there shoud have been a recall on it.
A friend of mine, who owns an 06, also told me he has the same problem, except both braces are broken.
Same problem with my 03 FLHTCI. Had to replace 3 of 4 brackets at a cost of approx. $80 total. Two months later, I take a hit from the rear that also damages the front fairing, and probably would have paid for some new brackets anyway. Just my luck...
My right side broke. Instead of replacing it, I just welded it back together. It is stronger than stock now. You might want to give that a try if you know anyone with a Mig welder. I agree, should be a recall, and it should extend past the standard two year warranty. I think the Suit's at HD are looking at the "Dollar in Hand" rather than creating repeat cusomers.
Purchased Oct. 2005, two year warranty gone 2 months ago.
Call HD Customer Service in Milwaukee and let them know about your dissatisfaction. Sometimes when you are only out of warranty by a short time they will give you a goodwill warranty on problems like this.
You are far better off repairing the factory brackets rather than a replacement with the same poorly designed originals. Home Depot for "L" brackets. Machine bolts, nuts and lock washers from their also. Holding up fine now, even with heavier speakers.
Yup, I found a broken bracket when I went to install my Hogtunes speakers! I did a full article on the problem and solution on my Biker Law Blog. You can read the article by clicking here or going to
"L" brackets from Home Depot did the trick for me also. I just couldn't see putting the same thing back on to break again and I'm still in the warranty with my bike 7 months old and 13,000 miles.
