I am ready to buy a 2006 Street Glide. Would you all please give me some pointers as to what extras I need to purchase before leaving the showroom like pipes etc. Want to make sure I get the pipes and Stage 1 Kit with the right maps.

Thanks

Arlie

Arlie,

What type of pipes are you interested in? The first thing I would do is pick out the pipes, have a Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner (SERT) installed and the stage 1 air cleaner upgrade. Don't let the dealer talk you into the Harley Download, it's crap. The SERT will allow you to tune your bike correctly with the pipes and air cleaner upgrade. There are tons of info on the SERT her on the forum, just do a search.

TERRY HAS GIVEN GOOD ADVICE AND I AGREE. PIPES ARE A MATTER OF CHOICE. THE HARLEY SE IS A GOOD CHOICE FOR THE MONEY. IF MONEY IS NO OBJECT THEN RINEHARTS OR BASSANI IS VERY GOOD. I PERSONALLY DONT LIKE VANCE AND HINES BUT MANY PEOPLE DO AND THEY ARE A QUALITY COMPANY. START LISTENING TO OTHER BIKES AND WHEN YOU HEAR ONE YOU LIKE ASK THEM WHAT THEY ARE RUNNING.

I like Hard Krome/PCIII, Terry goes with Rinehart/SERT. Don't be so concerned with what you get before you leave the showroom. The possibilities are just about endless, enjoy the ride!

I ended up going with SERT & V&H's Ovals..

As stated go to the dealer and try and listen to different pipes. Usually there will be quite a few bikes with diff exhaust installed.

Do NOT get the HD Download!!

Arlie,

For my 2006 Street Glide I got the Supertrapp 2 into 1 because it was 40% off and had the best performance and sound. I also got the SERT which is a good investment because you will need it for anything you do to the engine in the future. I added the SE stage 1 kit as a breather. It was then dyno tuned for optimal performance. Buy quality parts that you can use for future enhancements.

I did not install the parts until after I put 500 gentle miles on the bike. You need at least 5 heat cycles to break in the motor before the high rpm runs on the dyno. They can do that for you on the dyno but I prefer to break it in myself.

The street glide is a great bike and I'm sure you will love it.

Where is this proof of best performance and sound???

Or do you mean it was the best sound for you and possible best performance? I would like some info on where all the different pipes have been tested showing this to be the best pipe.

Well, the sound is purely subjective so this pipe sounded best to me of the ones I reviewed. As far as performance, I reviewed several options, slip ons, true duals, and 2 into 1. I read articles in mags like American Iron, spoke to several trusted mechanics, and reviewed dyno charts that the dealer had. The dealer had various product set ups dyno'ed to show power bands and what rpms peak tq and hp was reached. They use a DynoJet 250. Killer Creek HD in Roswell GA.

For the type of riding I do on my Street Glide the 2 into 1 exhaust systems seemed to give the best results. Rpm's from 2000 to 4500 and very rare going over 5000. I had three pipes to choose from, the V&H pro pipe, the Thunderheadder or the Supertrapp. The V&H pro pipe was the loudest and sounded good. The thunderheadder was $300 more, no discount offered, and sounded great. The supertrapp was $400, I really liked the sound, and by a small margin had better dyno results with the same set up on a stock 88. The mechanic said he had the best tuning results with the Supertrapp and the pipe could handle up to 103 cubic inches.

So for what I had to choose from on my stock street glide the supertrapp was the best performer.
