I"ve read a lot about engine builds over this past year and everyone has posted which cams they used, which heads they used, which exaust they used, etc. I've never seen anyone post which brand pump they use. My question is does anyone replace their oil pump to something else or just put the old one back in?? Thanks Dan
notlost-nc, thanks for the info. Was that something that you changed yourself? I've been looking and listening, as to which gear drive cams I want to switch to. I'm not going to replace a piece of plastic inside my engine with another. I was wanting to find out what others use for a pump. I read some time back, about a member who had all kinds of trouble with a Fueling pump sumping on him. I never did read if it was the pump or a bad install problem. Anyone else have a suggestion as to which way I should go? Thanks, Dan
If it were me, assuming it is your 06 and you want to go with gears you can't beat the Andrews 26g price from AMC right now at like $499 for the whole kit and kaboodle. Then, being an 06 and assuming you haven't had any problems with the pump, I'd put the same cam plate and pump back in it. I might however, add a Baisley spring if you wanted more oil pressure.
dawg, I've had low oil pressure on my bike since new. When it was a month old, the oil pressure would go to 0 when idling and the oil light would come on. That was a 100 degree day, with Syn 3 oil. now I use Mobil 1, and its broke in and a SERT, it doesn't run as hot, which helps. When it is hot, 90 degree day the bike will run about 25 psi when cruising. The real problem is it will not pull the same hill as the day before when the temps were cooler,, and the oil pressure was higher, 35-40. Same humidity reading. Is the oil pressure effecting the lifters, which could change the torque????? Am I on the wrong track????? Thanks Dan
I'd try the Baisley spring LMR-002 for $15 and see how it goes for you. If you are interested in gears like I said I'd check out those 26g's while the price is right and that will get you up hills. I had them in my 04 and was happy.
Dan, It sounds like you are having oil pressure problems so putting the old one back in is not going to work. Look into the S&S oil pump, they consistantly great reviews. Simple install while the bike is apart for the cam work. And go for the gear drive cams, you won't be disappointed.
