GW vs Ultra Classic
The cons of a Goldwing as I said before are maintenance. Some areas that require maintenance can take time to get to. Panels/seat and radio/stereo have to be removed to get to common areas.
And on a HD, you don't have to remove any "panels" to get to stuff? What about the seat? Don't you have to take that off to get to the battery or ECM? I replaced a headlamp bulb on my Wing yesterday by simply reaching behind the fairing. To do the same job on my Ultra Classic, the batwing fairing has to come off. Better deal, right?
Total and absolute BS. You get to the fuses on a Wing the same way as you do on a Harley. They're behind the left side panel. Get a clue.
Right. He'll explain it, then his face will light up and he'll smile and tell you that Wings's need maintenance so infrequently, it's basically a non issue. Again, get a clue.
I happen to own both, and I do know what I'm talking about. Where'd you get all that BS about Wings, your HD salesman?
pulled up at a restaurant, got off and walked in...sat down and somebody askes...."is that a Harley?" and Iproudly say "yes." this has happened several times. not once have i ever been asked..."is that a Gold Wing?"
I don't think its fair to compare the power of the 2 though. The Wing is a 6...it should run better than a 2 cylinder.

Leaving aside all the intangibles about style, soul, etc.,the GW still has two big liabilities for me:
1) the "sit up and beg squirrel" driver's seating position (don't become so fixated on passenger comfort that you lose sight of driver comfort).
2) thevery small amount of trunk and saddlebag space (look carefully at this and you will seewhy most Wings are pulling trailers).
I don't know how you build a bike that big and still have these liabilities. By the way, with a little looking you can find a basic Wing for much less than MSRP.
Rider passenger comfort are subjective, but the stock seat on the Ultra did beat the GW slightly (doesn't force your family jewels into your throat on the ultra)....neither are good for more then 50 miles even with the useless seat heater on the wing.
Hubby hasn't done any service yet but is getting ready to install the CB soon so we'll see how much it takes.

And yes I have owned both, as I've said before............try to get parts in 10 years for your GW. Honda is only interested in selling you a motorcycle, not keeping it on the road in the future. You'll have to buy the "latest and greatest" from them. I still can get parts for my 50 year old HD at the dealer.

The ECM is behind the right side cover on my 07 UC,probably is on your 08 if you have one
I own tools, and I work on whatever I feel like working on, but when it comes to my bikes, I change the oil, and that's about it. If it takes the tech "2 hours to change the air filter", along with all the other stuff he's going to do with the Goldwing's top shelter off at the VERY INFREQUENT SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE INTERVALS, so be it. The point is, it simply does not have to be done that often, and, to me, it's a non-issue. You want to let it eat at you, go for it.
