Default soos benefit poll

This poll is to benefit soos! Some background info: soos finally has gotten up the nerve to delve in and change out his bars, cables, etc. He will also be doing his own servicing. He has almost 20k miles on his scoot. I suggest that while he has his exhaust off for tranny side cover access he check his cam tensioners. Of course he may be a little nervous to do so, but let's give him some support and hear what you all have to say

I think he has on 06 model.

On my 07 at 17000 it had more wear than I wanted and I run Amsoil. If you end up checking and need replacement go for a ger drive setup...you will not have to return to that part of the engine again. You may be happy with the performance now and not to sure you can do gear drive on stock cams, so you mught have to get a bolt in cam like the Andrews 26. Many cam options out there for the 88". I know it adds up but better do this now or go in again in another 15-20k miles

edited... it is only ten bolts and 1 gasket, once the exhaust is off,to check the outside tensionor.

You're making me nervous. I have 20k on my bike and will be checking this at my 20k service. [:-]

What's the ballpark cost to go to the Andrews 26 for an 88" if I had a shop do it?

Guessing 4-6 hours labor plus parts. With the low labor hours that will also require the purchase of a set of adjustable pushrods, otherwise it will add another 4-5 hours labor to R&R the top rocker boxes.

Cams online can be found for $205 shipped at http://www.gopartsdirect.com/2005/index.asp?Site=HD

Gear drives run about $250

Pushrods can be found for about $140 or so, then a $50 top end gasket set.

Did you mean ACM....American Classic Motors? I saw a kit out there from them for that price.

How hard would it be to install this without a lot of experience working on bikes? I thought I saw an article in American Iron that did a step by step install on this.

kdietz and I have been in my 07 twice and we started with little experience. PhilM walked me through one of the first Texas build parties and it is very simple. Take your time and get a manual. The only difference on the 88" motors is that the cams are pressed in, so you will have to find a machine shop to help you out with that (maybe another $50). Get a friend over to help

Maybe somone on the forum could LOAN you the bearing removal and installer tool and the oil pump alignment pins. That is about the only special tools needed. You will need normal torx bits, torque wrenches, inch and pounds, and normal wrenches and sockets.
