Thanks twincam that makes sense. I know normally heat isn't an issue but in traffic it gets a bit hot.

I have not seen or heard anything about this yet, but as was mentioned above, those of us in the south have significantly higher heat to deal with in the summer. Not today... Its gonna be nice 60's or so.

Regarding the Baker pan..... I have never seen anything but the best quality, no BS products come from them. I will go look at that add after work & see what its all about.

Bert Baker is known for top quality. He's not the kind of guy to BS you.

I thought you used an oil cooler to cool the oil.

I read on another site that the stock Harley pan has inlet and outlet next to each other and the Baker setup directs the oil for better circulation thus likely better cooling plus one quart.

Why do you think larger pans are put on industrial engines, or Hi performance engines, HD (Heavy Duty) Engines? 2 reasons, extra cooling, extra oil to enhance oil lubrication properties. What I mean by that is it can take more oxidation and nitration before it's no longer in spec. The extra oil keeps the overall oil condition better between change intervals. No guessing on my part. I buy over a million gallons of oil each year, all for severe duty engines. We oil sample every 30 days.

We added larger sumps to many small engines (small in our terms) to reduce oil temp and longevity.

Adding baffles to create a first In, first out type of system will provide much better cooling rather than just dumping the oil back into the sump.

Harley's return is at the back of the pan, the feed or pick up is at the lowest frontal area of the pan. The earliest design did not have the baffle tray in it. The hot oil would enter the pan under pressure. That oil was forced to the botom and then picked up by the feed. They developed the internal baffle insert to correct this and it dramatically reduced oil temp.

This new pan from Baker is billet that will disipate heat better. I have a little story about Baker andhiscutomer service and buisness. I had ordered a reverse shift kit for mybuddies 2000 Deuce. I gave all the details on what I needed and when I needed it. I was in a pinch. We recieved the parts and some were incorrect. I called and talked with Bert and he said he would overnight the correct parts and pay shipping. The one part needed to complete was not in the package. Called Bert and explained our event was in 2 days and I would not have the correct parts in time. Bert sent the parts, via one of his parts packaging personnel in a vehicle to drive the parts to me. He is in Michigan, I am in Danville, Illinois, This is about 329 miles one way (5hrs). The guy arrived at around midnight. The coolest guywith the best attitude. I would have been pissed. Bert basically said if he gave his word I would have the correct parts, He would make sure I had them. That was way above and beyond! I will recommend he, his wife and company whenever asked. Outstanding company and people. If Baker claims it, Iam sure he has testing to back it.

I have one of the new oil pans. I waited 3 months for the pan to be released before I ordered the DDR 6 speed. I'm building a custom bagger with a 124" S&S. The guys at Baker new what I was building, e.g. S&S, FBI 200mm tire, Rolling Thunder frame, etc. It's a beautiful piece of work, mine is a billet two piece unit.

BUT... it won't fit an S&S motor. The newer S&S motors oil plumbing comes out under the motor and actually attaches to the oil pan via the filler plug and the pipe plug that is beside the filler plug. The new oil pan is larger and does not leave enough room between the motor cases and oil pan for the fittings.

The picture is the one piece cast unit. I got one of the prototype billet alum, two piece units. Price was $475 if anyone is interested.
