I am running 91 octane gas. While getting on to the highway I gave it full throttle to get up to speed quickly. I noticed the the lifters making a pinging noise. It has happened several times while doing this in the last few days. 5K on the 07 ultra. Any thoughts?
Try changing fuel brand - I have been using CHEVRON and have had great luck with no ping... Have you done the stage 1? If not this will also help as you'll be able to adjust the fuel system off the dealer OEM\EPA lean condition...
Is 91 octane the highest available in your area? I use the highest octane available and buy from gas stations with indivitual hoses/nozzles for each grade. If91 is the highestthen change brands of fuel. The noise wasn't coming from your lifters, its called preignition and is hppening inside your cylinders. You want do do all you can to avoid it.
If it just started doing this then maybe you just got a bad tank of gas and that's all your problem is. I use Chevron 91 octanesince that's what the owners manual recommends. That's alsohighest octane available in the Phoenix area or all of Arizona for that matter and it contains 10% Ethanol and I never hear any pinging.
It isn't the lifters making the noise its actually pre ignition ( VERY BAD ) . My 2006 EGC suffered badly from this and the only fix is to ugrade your EFI computor ( I went with Thundermax ) although there are many options available. Do not and I stress DO NOT allow the pinging to continue as serious engine damaged can result. I will also bet that you have an overheating problem as well.

It's bad - compare it to slamming a sledgehammer on top of your pistons everytime you heara ping..
My 06 rkc did the same (95 cu.in stage2) - Dealer tried every map that was just slightly compatible - but it did not help. Finally they gave up and installed a Powercommander ... tuned it on a dyno and retarded the ignition a bit in the problem areas .. Have run great ever since
If you live in TX and rode during the summer, and you first experienced pinging in December, it's probably the gas. It's either bad gas, a bad brand, or the effects of "dumbed down" winter gas.
That said, since you live in a warm climate, and you know that your engine will ping under the right circumstances, I also recommend a Power Commander so that you'll have the ability to adjust the fuel and timing. Many places (such as Fuel Moto) have good prices on these units (about $265, IIRC), and they're pretty user-friendly.
my 07 had BAD ping,, the company came out later with a "tourque smooth calibration"
if your bike was one of the first runs of 07's,, it might not have had this down load instaled.
once it was put into my bike, my ping went away.
bottom line,,,, they made the 07's extremely lean!
more fuel= no ping
