It stays with you and goes on your next bike. I did not leave mine on my bike when it was traded in, nor do any of my friends I ride with. They are purchased by a loved one for the rider, not necessarilythe bike.
If you never ride again, but loved to ride, I would see it as a loving jesture to pass it on to a loved one or good friend that you care for to go on their bike,but I don't think any of that is in the folklore.
