I've got my bike ripped apart and want to paint the inner fairing red, and the dealer wants $90.00 a quart for red. Does anyone know what the colour codes are for HD, or do I have to spend the big bucks?
call the parts guy at the dealership and get the number. chances are you will still have to go with harleys paint. they are very good about keeping their products away from outsiders. one way is to get a small bottle of touch up paint inthe right color and have a shop blend it.you wont save that much and by the time you spend all the time and frustration it will probably work out about the same.
Pay the $90 and know you are getting the exact match

Go to an auto body paint supplier. A lot of them who deal with DuPont (and other brands) have the paint match "camera". It gets placed on an existing body part that is the color you want and uses a rubber gasket to seal out all other light. It basically takes a sealed picture of the paint and will calculate the code. The numbers are then entered into the paint suppliers system and the mix code generated.
To be honest though $90 for a quart of red paint is not that far off. Any red-based color will be higher due to the method and tints used to create the red. I just bought a quart of DuPont Chromabase silver for a repair on a customers car and it was $77. Mica content, pearl content, base tints, etc. will all play a part in the cost. Being in the business I wouldn't blink at $90 for a quart of red automotive paint.
Thanks guys! I guess I'll spend the bucks and buy HD. It just seems that they are always 3 times what I spend on other stuff. I just painted my truck, and it was $90 a gallon. Oh well, I guess that the HD staff have to eat too!
That price is not to bad. Red, and any paint with red for pigment is going to be the most expensive paint because its licensed and imported. It is not made in the US. So your getting a deal. I just had my red car painted last year since it was totalled back in Aug 05, and I bought it back and repaired all myself and got it on the road. Thats the same story that my painter gave me. You will pay for red.
