I have a 07' Black Cherry Ultra and after 10,000 miles the tank has lost all it's shine where my thighs (chaps) rub against it. I have tried a few things to no avail.I think that the clear coat has been dulled. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to bring this shine back up? What about one of those Mother's Foam ***** for a drill? I am a little hesitant on that idea as I have not talked to anyone that has used one of those.
The foam ***** are good but not for what you need. I would do it by hand to avoid burn through of the clear coat.
Start off with a liquid wax or the KIT presoftened wax in the yellow can by turtlewax and try a spot rubbing it in circular motions. It may be enough to do the job before going to a coarser route.
If this isn't enough, get some light white polishing (not rubbing) compound and give it a go followed up by the liquid wax rub again to finalize/polish it and a final coat of what ever wax you use regurlarly.
It's just a dulled clear coat and there's no need for a deep cutting of the finish to restore it.
Try some mild polishing compound or the scratch removing polish from HD or other brand. Rub Rub and follow directions, I would not recommend the ball as I think its for metal. Why are you wearing Chaps? You have to read the forum on Chaps Fingerless gloves and tassels hanging from bars.
If you really want wear the chaps you should contact profinish to take care of the rub areas with some protection film. Here is a link. https://www.hdforums.com/m_2639908/tm.htm
I've had good results with Meguirs 3 step system, step 1 deep cleans the clear coat then step 2 polishes to remove any swirls. Step 3, wax with whatever wax you prefer.
Might try a "CLAY BAR" you can pick these up in just about every Auto Parts or Chain Store like Wal-Mart... Read the directions and give it a try.... If it doesn't work then the clear has been damaged beyon repair and it's time to see a Auto Body Shop....
