Sounds like your nieghbor is trying to get the cost of all the extras he put on out of you. Most of that stuff is a write off and a lot of people dream aboutfinding someonethat will pay extra for them but it normally doesn't happen.
I too paid just over $17,000 for an 07 model.
I would go for the new one, I sure do like mine.

You know the 04 bikes history! That is a big plus. I don't think you can change the handlebars on the 08 yet, I may be wrong, and that is a big negative unless you are 6" 2" tall and can reach them comfortably. Just my .02

Keith,

you're right - the more I think about it that price is way above the book and way above what any dealer would offer him on a trade in. I know he needs the cash for his project but I'll let someone else subsidize it for now.

your other comment about being more careful with my money caught me off guard. I never once said what I paid for my 1200C so why would you lecture me about that?

I did like your saying about making money when you buy, not when you sell - a very good point!

Kevin

KJ, buy yourself an 08. You won't be sorry. The new touring bikes have some nice changes. The bars and the seat have been re-designed on the Road King. You may still want to change them later, because they don't look that much different. I have an 07 RKC and I'm glad I bought new.

To me $14,000 is pretty High. If I remember corect I think I paid $16,250 for my 04RK Brand new. Also if it was me I wouldn't want to ever buy a HD from my friend/nieghbor just because to me it wouldn't ever feel like it was mine. So if I was in your shoes I buy new...........

I loved my RK police bike but decided to upgrade this year to an 08 streetglide. bought it in rochester, mn for $17,625 with no doc fees or set up and cruise. obviously tax and title are extra.....but consider this......if you buy from a dealer in the same state youmay nothave to pay the full sales tax if you trade in your sporty. You would pay sales tax on the difference in trade-in value versus the price of the new scoot. Ended up saving me close to $800 in sales tax. To me it was the deal breaker on an 08 versus an 07 streetglide. just my 2cents, but check with your local dealer on tax breaks when trading in your bike. you may be pleasantly surprised.....or not! P.S. $14K is too much for that bike.

One thing to consider is the 11000 miles on the 04. I don't know how long you plan to ride it, but lets say you put 15000 miles on it in a year or so, it will have nearly 30000 miles on it and you may have to take a good hit to get rid of it. I have a new RKC and have bought some things for it, but nowhere near $3000 worth. less than $1500 for some chrome goodies and the SE A/C, PClll, Rush slipons. (I do my own installation). As far as the seat and bars go, I can live with the stock ones, but that's me, YMMV. I guess I'm saying, "buy an 08" . As has been said, "buy quality and only cry once" (or buy the one you REALLY want).
