Default RE: rear rim width?

you can put a 160 Metz on a 4.25 rim with no problemsor adjustments--- that's probably as wide a you can go without getting a kit---HogPro has a 180 kit showed that you can use a stock SG fender with --- but it cost about $1700--- I guess that is not so bad if you are getting rims anyway
ORIGINAL: thall

the 4.25 should work and make it look wider i have a friend with one on his 02 road king look real good

The hogpro kits have new fenders in them. Still not a bad price...

ORIGINAL: timberland

My brother inlawjust put a 180 Metzlertire, 5"x 16" wheelon aused cop bike and that is about the limit without a new swing arm. It clears the belt, more importantly the tire is now centered in the fender, which is more than Harley could do.Machining is required on the brake caliper and new wheel spacers with a new wheel. Its cool.Hemakes wheels from blankson a CNC mill.Next up my 2008 Street Glide, fender is larger on the Street Glidebut we both believe 180 is it for tire.
I'm not Timberland's brother in law, but I have the same setup (16x5 wheel, 180 tire) on a stock swingarm. I put a 2004 belt on, and had to clearance the caliper as he says. Buddy of mine did the work. He has a 17x6 wheel on his RK, but had to go to a chain to do that. We agree that 180 would be the max with a belt and no kit involved. My buddy is a machinist by trade, and paints, and does fiberglass, and motor work, and, well hell, he does it all! One on the nicest guys on this earth too. Anyway, it can be done, but probably not for the faint of heart.

If a person just wanted to go with the wheel and tire itself though what will fit?

I second that. I tried an 18x5.5 with a 160 on my 06 SG with the factory fender. Side of the tire caught the fender on both sides when I lowered the jack. Already had the wheel so I had to buy a new fender. Guess all fenders are not created equal if anyone can get a 5.5 or 6 wheel with a 160 or 180 in the factory fender.

I said a 180 will fit, but I meant the frame/swingarm. I put a wider fender on. I didn't try to get the stock one to fit, but pretty sure it wouldn't have. I don't know what the widest tire is that would fit the stock fender, but my guess would be a 160 with a 4.25 inch wheel. I believe the SE RK that has a 170 even has a different fender, course HD would make sure to have alot of clearance. Hope that helps.

PS I did have a 150 with a 16" stock wheel before, but my bike is a 2000, newer models could maybe go more with the skinnier belt.

I used a FBI fender. At that time FBI sold me the fender kit only, don't know if they still do that. My buddy who did the original work has since made a mold to build up his own fenders from fiberglass. He makes them to what ever the customer wants, lights, etc. I believe Native Custom also sells fenders. Hope that helps.

The cop bike that I refered to above has the origional fender and swing armon it, its a 2007. The fender struts are channel material, they ground out on the back side to clear the 180 Metzler, I think only on the left side. Stock belt. You have to machine the caliper, center the wheel in the fender, requires making new wheel spacers and install a new 5" wheel.

I am positive you can put a 150 Dunlop on a stock wheel and do no modifications and install it on a Street Glide.

The FBI kit..., I have another b-inlaw that has the "Yellow Snake" that was featured in American Baggers Mag a few monthes back , its on FBI's web site too. That bike was done by FBI, and has a 200 on it with obviously FBI's kit, first the tire clears the belt by about a millimeter, the FRAME was ground on toget the belt to clear it. The problem with the FBI kit is the tire STILL is not centered in the fender, my guess they learned from harley on how to make that look goofy...its all in the spacers and simple math... subtract from one side and add to the other.
