Hey guys - New to this Forum stuff so I'll try not to step on any toes. I'm thinking of a six speed conversion on my '06 Streetglide and I lean toward the Baker DD6setup. Right now I'm upgrading to more power w/ heads, GD cams and a 95" kit and want to regain some mileage if possible. Some input on the pros and cons would be very helpful since this unit is not cheap.
Thanks To All
However, hindsight being what it is...I think I would have rather bought the OD6 instead, and I have a reason.
My reason, Billet4U makes an open belt primary for Baggers but it won't work with the DD6, will with the OD6. Reason...DD6 changes compensating sprocket, OD6 doesn't.
Anyway, great tranny..not hard to install. 14,000 miles on it.
I've got one and love it. It was one of their original design DD6's and was a-ok when my bike was a 98" build @ 113/111.
After my recent upgrade to a 120", I began having clutch problems that we traced back the the DD6 - specifically the thing that made mine "original" vs current style DD6. After a brief chat with them, I sent the gear set back to them and they upgraded it for no charge! I received it yesterday and will install it this weekend.
They have a couple gearing options. I got the one that is close to 3.37 (more like 3.30 with their setup) gearing that folks like to change to, but in 6th gear on hwy, I can cruise all day long @ 70mph running approx 2650 rpm.
Its a great gearset! Smooth, quiet, very nice and they support thief stuff 100%.
Got a friend with the DD6 and he likes it. I have a S.E. 6 speed in a Fatboy and I like it as far as no problems and smooth shifting but I get worse gas milage on the road than I did with the 5 speed. I have a 95" kit with Mackie 590 cams and I guess it isn't reving enough to be efficient even at 80mph at 3000rpm. Got me a 103" Street Glide last year so the Fat Boy doesn't go so far from home anymore. The cruise drive 6 speed in that is great too. Just saying a 6 speed isn't very useful under abot 75 to 80 mph and if your geardrive cams are very long on duration and lift it might disappoint you.
I run a Jim 6 speed in a 99 Road King (116" Twincam) and I'm installing a Baker DDR6 in a bike I'm building with a 124" Twincam. Others may have different experiences, but from my perspective, when you make hp with a twincam, FORGET mileage. Nothing is goig to help a lot. Like I said, that is my opinion. I ride hard and love to hear the motor wind....
If you do get one, I still have a new Dakota Digital speedo calibrator that I don't need. My tuner made the adjustments to the speedo instead so it was never used. Would give you a good deal on it.
