has anyone installed a 6 speed gearset in their HD case? what brand did you use and how was the build????
was thinking Baker DD6 for myself but would like some feedback-lets here it
Didn't do it myself but had the dealer do it as part of a "let's make some winter work for my mechanics so I don't have to lay them off" package deal on my '02 FLHT a couple of years ago. Had them install the Screaming Eagle six-speed gear set in the five-speed case. To make that work they needed to drill one spot on the case. The installation kit came with a drill guide that bolted in place on the transmission case. The guide positioned the bit exactly where it needed to be and prevented it from slipping. Couldn't screw it up if they tried.
I've seen a couple of magazine articles on this install and it didn't appear terribly complicated.
I've been real happy withthe SEtranny. It's a lot smoother and nicer than the six-speed on my '07 Ultra.
01 Fl from a Softail Revtech. Needed to change gear sets. Have hardtail w/6 speed Revtech. Took our gears & exchanged them with my 01 FL. No problems with either one
Had my local indy install the DD6 in my 04 ultra. No additional work or parts needed except for mph calibration kit. It cost about another 100 bucks or so. I would do it again in a heartbeat!
I also put the Screamin' Eagle-Speed in my '02 Fat Boy. It bolts in with just a little grinding. The supplied template shows you where. You need to get the 6-Speed end cover too. Same ratios as the 5-speed with the overdrive sixth. Great tranny no problems in 3 years behind a pretty healthy 95 incher.
