Default Adjustable rider backrest install......

Anyone done this install on an 08 RK yet? I did it the other day and what a pain in the a$$ to route the cable. Where did you route it and can you give advice? It works but cable just seems like it could be better placed. The instructions are junk and the pics are horrible. Also I have been wondering about the height of the pad off the seat. From the posts I've seen, everyone is cutting down the post tobring it closer to the seat. Is there any adjustment to the pad on the post or putting the post down farther in the bracket? I'm also getting ready to do a detachable pass. backrest install so if anyone has a link to the how to on this subject I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

I have an '07 RKC and plan to install my adjustable back rest soon. Hope it goes better than this, but not likely!

Actually, I did one on a 05 glide and didn't find it that bad. the frame is the same and I routed the cable along the inside of the frame andmounted the adjuster along the inside of the engine compartment where a heat shield would go. The backrest pad section has a adjustment if you feel on the back of the pad there is a button, push it and the backrest will adjust up or down. Don't know why anyone would cut them off? Happy trails and safe roads!

Same deal on my 07 RKC. I didn't think it was that bad either. Routed the cable through the frame and under the seat, and attached the adjuster where the instructions specify. I tried a few different options, but following HD's instructions are the best bet.

Well from talking to the parts manager at the H-D dealership he stated the 08's have differences and that he had to do a little mod to the frame to get it to go through. The area in question is where the cable leaves the handle and passes throught the frame and has to go around or behind the fuse/battery boxes. I can see what he's talking about because the way the instruction put it it sounds easy but the hole it's supposed to go through behind the "large oval" opening doesn't line upto allow a clean pass through. I think I'm going to remove the fuse panel to gain better visual and hands on access to the area and route it better, unless I hear from someone else whose found an easier way.I have nothing but time to tinker since it's been raining for weeks here in WA!!!! As for the cutting of the post, even after I push the button and lower it the all of 1 inch it allows, it still sticks up a good 2-3 inches above the seat and looks odd. It feels nice and hits me right in the middle of the back but just doesn't look right.

Yep the instructions are crap. I had the same problem installing it on my 08 Rk.. In the instructions it says not to remove cable from the handle but that was the best way I found to make routing the cable btween the battery and fuse box.
How were you able to mount the actual bracket to the fender. The cable for the rear lights crosses over the fender right right where the bracket bolts on and the connector is in the way and the cable is too short to run it over the bracket. I was thinking of building an extension to re-rout the light cable. Suggestions?

I just disconnected it from the the clip that holds it on the fender and the bracket holds it down. just move it down and place the bracket over it. It fits and won't go anywhere. Did the same thing with the cable....... what a pain!

Sorry Jonny D/swamp thing- Seem the issue you ran into was 08 spacific as I had no real issues putting mine on. I have a sundowner seat so, when I put the backrest all the way down it is even with the bottom of the seat

Jonny,

What did you have to do to the frame to get it to route correctly? I have a 08 SG, and I can't get enough cable slack so I can lock the seat in position. There is no through hole to route the cable so there are fewer severe bends. Frustrating as hell, because I got the kit from a member here and it's in perfect shape - just not able to get it installed right on the SG.

Thanks in advance...
Rick

I just picked mine up from the dealer and the adjustable cable wasn't in the box, is it a separate part #, and yes I'm sure I ordered the one you can adjust with the cable.

I'll contact the dealer when they open tomorrow.
