Chuck 1: My '04 HD Service Manual has a section, "STRIPPING MOTORCYCLE FOR SERVICE," 3-16.and item 3 is: "Gently pull left side cover from frame downtubes (no tools required)."
Section "SYSTEM FUSES," 8.3, at item 2 is: "Gently pull left side cover from frame downtubes (no tools required)."
Don't know what your '08 Manual says, if anything, about these.
The fact is that some of the tasks are covered in the SM, like removing the side covers, but may not be covered under the topics we'd asssume HD would use. Enjoy your new bike, enjoy working on the bike, and glad you have the SM--an owner's best friendIMO.
Be careful when reinstalling, the rubber grommets that hold the side cover on are famous for pushing through the frame. Little lubrication like previously mentioned will help prevent that.
