Good information so far, I would add this. You can tell a few things by looking. Generally less restriction means louder pipes. For instance if you can see straight through the baffle, then you can count on a loud set of pipes. I recently bought a used Ultra and it came with really loud slip on's. When I started it for the first time!!!! I got a surprise. So, I bent over and saw all the way up to the bend in the header pipe! Doh!!! So I replaced them with a set of Harley Screamin Eagle II slip ones. These are not as loud, but certainly louder than my stock EG Classic is. So I am quite pleased with that combination. I really like the looks of the Reinhart's but the couple I have heard were very loud. I am not sure if they make different baffles for them or not. That would allow tuning of the sound somewhat. I have had two sets of the Screamin Eagle's on different bikes and liked both for a balance of Louder. Be sure and give Vance and Hines a peak too. My Fat Boy had a Screamin Eagle Pro pipe on it and they say this was made by Vance and Hines for Harley. I liked that one for the same reason's I like my slip-ons now. Louder, but not too loud. Well, as most others said, go look and listen, but also, just look up the pipe and if you see straight through, it will be loud. Good luck!! [/align]
I agree with the other replies. Go listen to some other pipes. When I first purchased my 07 RKC, I put screamin eagles on it. Not the sound I wanted. Then I put Rinehart true duals and it is perfect for me. I added a thundermax with autotune so I could do the installl myself and if I ever need to change pipes or mods, I don't have to gotto the stealer to get it done. Good luck with whatever you decide on.
Listen to others, but make sure you are comparing like engines as well. A set of pipes will sound different on an 88, 96, 103 etc. Talk to the owners as most will readily share their experiences. Could save you a bunch...I KNOW!!
Loudest pipes I heard were a set of thunder header slip-ons on a 08 street glide. Oh my god, every time the pistons fired you could hear a very HARD hit like the motor was not stock. My local stealer quit selling them though because they said they breath almost too good and mess with the o2 sensors making them hard to tune. So I wound up with rush 2 inch, they are pretty loud and you can look straight the mufflers. They almost like going straight pipes. The only thing is I cant hear my stereo at highway speed very well anymore, but I sure love the sound of my exhaust.
