Well this is all very interesting. I'm glad you didn't sustain any injuries, it sounds like it could have been much worse. The first time someone is injured due to a stalling problem on a new bike under warrranty (and not modded), there could be some serious lawsuits filed. I have an '06 FLTRI with 1460 miles and am fortunate to not have any of these issues. Although, the bike did sound like it was gonna stall one day when it had been warmed up and was idling for quite awhile, but it didn't stall. I've read high temp issues here with '06 bikes, which concerns me 'cause I live in Arizona. And while the temps here are very moderate right now, summer temps consistantly are in the triple digits. I'm holding off doing any performance mods for the time being as I had what appeared to be a front cylinder jug base gasket leak (started after 1k service). I brought it in and they couldn't find a leak. Long story short, I don't want to do any performance mods till I'm sure there is no leak. But I'm dying to richen it up a bit and have it sound like a Harley, it's just too quiet with the stock exhaust.
Jap bikes do have their problems. My 02,1600 V twin, air cooled Yama Roadstar would
cough and backfire through the carb. To the point that it would quit running.
I had to do a ported intake, big air kit,and rejet to make it run. The motor also had a
knock in the engine, Yama said they all knock, some worse than others. NO FIX
I bought an 06 FLHRI in September. Bike runs great, but does run pretty damn hot.
Bought an air kit and SERT,but will wait on the install,to see if HD comes up with a
solution.
Stock Jap twins may be faster, but the RK is far superior in ride quality, handling, and
overall fit and finish. No more Jap for me.
My 06 Ultra also coughed when cold and would just about throw you if you were in a sharp slow speed turn. I put a PCIII on yesterday and put in the map that matched my pipes and AC. Idles and runs smooth now. The motor does not run as hot. I could not touch my seat at a red light it was so hot. PCIII has worked for me so far. I agree I should not have had to buy anything to make a 06 bike run right. I had a 04 Honda VT1100 and it ran great. I thought HD Ultra was an upgrade. I was pissed my first 2 months I owened it. Now I am happy with it no thanks to HD or the EPA.
i got my ultra in august...i had the stumbling when starting out, stalling in hot weather, and every symptom listed in this thread.
called MOCO cust svs and they had dealer send my ecm back for reprogramming and installed the cvo injectors.
although i haven't been in any 90* weather, it's running smoother, cooler, and better, especially at lower rpm's.
i put 1500 miles on it and the ends of the mufflers looked like new...another 600 miles after the fix and they are soot covered now.
was getting about 45 - 46 mpg before...about 43 now.
Phil., thanks for keeping us informed. I also have a SG and went through the SERT & Dyno but it still doesn't run smooth and vibrates excessively. Very disappointed with this vibration issue. And it wasn't the motor mount because they have replaced it already. I am going to see my dealer this week and see what can be done. If I learn anything I will share the news.
...on the vibration...i had none till about 800+ miles...i was out trying to put miles on one morning before work, so i could get the first service done before going to York in September. after i slowed and made a right turn on to another road, i felt the vibration start around 2200 rpm...at first i thought it might be the road, because of the heavy triaxle traffic, but it wasn't. dealer said nothing wrong...
since then...they've come out with the new motor mount...will see if that will help
Also ask if they dyno tuned or just put one of HD's downloads in the SERT. Some dealers try to pull that crap. In that case the SERT is worthless, it needs to be dyno tuned.
What about bikes w/Carb. Do they have the same issues ?? I ordered a 2006 FLHR, The dealer really did not want to sell me a bike with carb. After I put down my deposit I looked in the service dept. and noticed that most bikes back there had fuel injection problems.
That's good that your dealership is taking time out to actually do some customer service. But the SERT, Stage 1 and true duals will take care of this problem also. Good luck and I'm glad to here that you wasn't injured.
