God bless him and you! You are obviously a father who loves his son. Support his decision. That little boy you raised and cared for and nurtured through good and bad is now a man. Even more so now that he has decided to join the small percentage of citizens of this country who are honorable enough to volunteer to defend it. Today's Army is quite different from the one I was in in the 70's. Today's Army is the best trained, best equipped and best led in this nation's history. I spent 18 mos. in Iraq 05-07. The thing that most impressed me there was the character, integrity, guts and courage of our young soldiers and Marines. I know we all think this latest generation is a lost cause, but not the men and women of our armed forces. They are smart, tough and deeply patriotic. They are winners. I am proud of your son. Tell him that for me.

Thats no ****.
Much more professional than in previous years.
When I first went in early 70's I kept wondering, "where’s the Navy I joined?"
By the time I was finished (late90's) the world of the military had changed dramatically.
The old horror stories I heard from "old timers" was a thing of the past.
These guys are intelligent, professional and motivated. Today your son is going to have to work for it to keep up.
And he will be a better man for it.
Heck by now - and I havnt been out that long. I'd have trouble keeping up.

I may not have done enough, but I thank God for the privilege to have served.

I loved my time in the military. Your son will be just fine. Be prepared though, they are going to turn yourboy into a man. They taught me lessons ranging from the importance of: not being self-centered, being part of a team, your word is your bond, and everything in between.

My parents and friends say when I came out they could barely stand me because I had so much confidence (arrogance).

Oh ya, I got out to work as a civilian for the Dept of Defense. I now pay cash for every toy I own.

Thank you military!!!

Be proud and worry,
It's a Fathers right.

Tell you son I said
"Thank You for serving our Country"
and
"Keep your head down!"

Here's a tune that might bring a few things into clear site for you both (parent and child).

I feel for ya. I did 10 years, but things were differen't back in the 70's. Vietman had just ended when I was a junior in high school. Out of 7 kids, only 2 showed an interest in the military. My oldest daughter did 10 years also and like the old man, she had enough and got out. Now my son is leaving for the Army on March 8th. He finished high school last month,5 months early so he could go. We weren't going to sign for him, going to make him wait until he was 18 and sign for himself, but he has his heart set on it, so we finally broke down. We aren't exactly thrilled about the current situation in the Middle East to say the least. He is accepted in the Ranger program. Pretty sure as a Ranger he will for sure see some actionsomewhere. Like you, we are concerned, but I think we just have to support them and hope for the best. Best wishes for your son, I'm sure you're proud of him.

Guys come home from Iraq, they didn't come home from Nam. Not quite 4,000 dead is nothing. It's sad yes, but in terms of war, it's nothing. You'll be worried, there is nothing anyone can say or do to keep that from happening. But, be proud that he loves something more than himself. Be proud he's not a punk looking for a handout with his pants half way down his *** thinking the world owes him something. You raised a fine kid I'm sure. I'd give a plug for the Navy or Marines, but it sounds like he's made up his mind. Good luck to him.
