Default EXTENDED WARRENTY

Whats up, all.
I'm new to the forum, but have been watching for some time now. Great info and good people and that what riding is about. Well here's my question. I'm about to purchase a 2006 SG. Should I get the extended 5yr warranty???? Has anyone ever had an issue that was warranty related that went past the standard warranty? Any help on this issue is greatly appreciated.

I personally wouldn't. Unless you plan on never doing any motor work.

If you mean working on it yourself then that would be me. I have the extended warrenty.

I've only had my ride for a month and a half and hope to never need the warrenty, but it is there should I need it.

I have the 7 year extended, and it saved me big time when I had wiring harness problems this year. There is also a past member of this forum that had 167,000 miles on his 2003 U.C., and when the cam chain went, and he blew his engine, it was replaced for $50.00

I bought the extended warranty when I financed my bike. Iyt was only a few dollars extra a month and if I ever plan on selling the bike, that will help with the resale value.
And like Joe posted, it can come in very useful.

Depends on the dealer... The place I bought my bike told me no engine mods would be covered under warranty (even those they themselves installed). I've found since then that that seems to be just that dealer. Then there's the issue of proving that the mods were the cause of the problem, which seems to be the legal aspect of the problem, but doesn't mean you won't have to jump through incredible red-tape hoops to emerge victorious (like lawyers and letters and attorneys and whatever).

Mine is now almost 4 years old and has NO problems whatsoever, so pretty much glad I didn't pay more for warranty stuff. From what I've heard, if you hate hassles and love stock bikes, maybe the extended is a better thing. If you want to change anything, and you hate fighting for your rights, maybe not. And maybe if you have a good dealer, all this is moot.

Just like any insurance policy, it's a gamble.

I gambled for not getting any extended (95 kit at 729 miles) and haven't regretted it.

You don't have to buy it now, wait 1.99999 years and then make the decision, depending on what happens between now and then.

Red, when I had the wiring problems I called the extended warrenty providor myself, and found that most things are covered, even after upgrades, even if you do the work yourself. So even though the dealer has always implied that they have to do everything, and that it all has to be HD parts, thats not really true. Now, to protect myself, I have one of those school type binders in the garage, with a stapler, and everytime I buy anything for the bike I staple the reciept in and mark the number of miles down. Then if they ever want to say, I didn't change my oil, or tranny fluid, or changed brake pads or whatever, I can pull out the binder and they shut up. I've done this with all of my bikes and have never had a justified warrenty claim denied.

Thanks for the intel. Is there any where I can go (on the net) to read up or EDU-MA-KATE myself on this mysterious HD warranty?

Thanks for the help.

Great idea, Joe. I just tend to be a "non-confrontational" sort, and prefer to know the rules up front. HD warranties seem to be a "who ya know, who you b**w sort of thing, and I prefer everything (including oddities) written into the main. Just because you have to hire a lawyer doesn't mean winning the case will get him paid. Glad it's worked out for you...

Fortunately, I don't speak from experience in the Harley world. Mine have always been rock-solid way past their warranty periods. So I guess I'm just gun-shy from every other bike/truck/ATV/Dirtbike I've ever owned and somewhat a victim of what the dealers have told me.

Plus, reading the forums on here hasn't boosted my confidence in the MOCO any...
