Hey thanks for the replies. I can see I still have a lot to learn. I like doing this kind of stuff myself. I'm a pretty good weekend car mechanic, so I didn't expect the harley to be to difficult. Looks like the cams are nota simple pull and replace like I first thought.
My 02 RKC has 20000 miles on it and I thought I better check the tensioners. Then I started thinking while I'm in there to go a head and put in gear cams and bump up the performance just a little at the same time. I don't want the bike down very long or fork out big money just yet, so a cam change was where I wanted to start.
Gear cams are really pretty simple to install. I enjoy the slight whirring of the gears at idle & racier exhaust sound that comes with performance builds.
I had the S&S setup in my '03 Road Glide, installed at about 5k, sold the bike at 40k and no problems at all. Almost no noise, my two buddies both ride '03 &'04 Road Glides and we could barely tell the difference except for my idle, it sounded sooo much better. Another friend put the S&S in his and had nothing but trouble, was told the lash was off and wasn't checked by a newbie mechanic who did it on his off time ...He hated the noise and ended up putting them on a shelf.
I had the Andrews 26 G cams and only hear a slight whine. I love knowing I don't have tensioners to worry about. And it certainly improved the low end torque.
