DrBob81,
Thank you for the information. This is the way I'm going to go, along with 75W90 synthetic tranny lube.
Sorry choochoo there was no mid year change to "fix"a problem that doesnt exist. The '07 trans is the same all year. A bit of gear noise is not a problem, this has been beat to death and not 1 trans has blown up due to 5th gear. 5 speed bikes made theSAMEF"N NOISEin 4th gear. The problem comes from using to light of an oil in a gear box. USE GEAR OIL IN A GEAR BOX! I guess you never drove a Chevy with a Muncie trans, talk about gear noise. The IDS is for import riders converting to HD.
Baker is a smart man and found a great way to get $700.00 out of all these new riders by fixing a "PROBLEM" that doesnt exist. My hat's off to him for being a great entrepenuer!
Once you put the IDS on, you can run any lube you want.
Without ever riding the bike, these guys will tell you what's wrong with it. Gimme a break. That's the same crap I got from the dealer.
My guess would be that the reason there is not a lot of talk about noise in the dynas and soft tails is because they do not have fairings and/or fairing lowers to "reflect" the noise back to the rider, and those bikes are significantly lighter than a bagger so not as likely to lug it in a higher gear. I personally ride at or above 2000 rpm so as not to lug the bike. I have not noticed any clatter but gear whine is going to be there by design.
pittguy... may I ask what you ended up paying to have the IDS installed, and how long it took?
Thanks
You can get it for 198.00 from Zanotti HD in Pittsburg or try talkin your dealer into matching their deal like I did. Save even more by putting in on yourself...if you have a lift or can borrow one its pretty easy stuff.
Keep guessing. Dyna and softail have a different length primary.
The 5th gear noise can be affected by diff tranny lube.
The 6th gear noise can be affected by diff primary lube.
HD Syn 3 10% improvement.
Redline 60% improvement.
Harley fixed it by changing the rear pulley.
That makes it some kind of resonance thing.
Harley won't cover it under warranty because it's a noise not a mechanical failure.
Oh, and it's also temperature dependent. No noise below @65 deg.
Requires a special HD tool to press in the bearing. Not a DIY.
Why are some bikes horrible and some not affected?
I have no idea. Or maybe it was all in my mind.
