I want to put a rack on my leather (2003 Road King Classic) tour-pak. The H-D catalog lists a "Mini Tour-Pak Lid Rack" #53100-96 and says that it will fit the tour pack if the pack is equipped with a H-D tour-pak lock ($170). I don't want to spend the cash for the lock. Has anyone installed this rack on their leather tour-pak or is there a better option?
I already have the tour-pak mounted on the rack and on the docking points, and it fits OK on my bike. What I'm after is a rack that mounts on the top of the leather tour-pak.
been thinkin' of doing the same with mine........just aint had the ***** yet to try it. I have seen several R.K.s with a rack on the tour pak, but have never been able to talk to the person who installed to see exactly how they did it. The parts man @ my dealership said he hasn't seen it done, but believes it can be done easily, but the lid would need reinforcing to keep it from collasping with weight.
I saw a guy at Sturgis last year that had a rack on his leather tour pack. I was the small rack that HD sells # 53100-98. He had bolted it on just like the instructions had called for. I think as long as you did not try to carry too much , the rack will work fine. It was just bolted thru the hard shell on top. He had a good sized barrel bag fastened to it. He said he tries to carry bulky but light clothes that take up alot of space in his tour pack. I have been thinking about getting a leather tour pack. I am tired of using a backrest bag. When I get one, I will add the rack.
I once spoke to a guy who had put the full size rack on the top a leather tour pack (RKC) and did have to reinforce the lid and he did that byusing flat stock app: 3" wide and 1/8" thick and had it rolled to match the contour of the tour pack and bolted the rack through the lid and through the steel plates and has no problem with putting a full bag on top.
Someone here has done it.
There was a post with a pic a couple of months ago. They used the 'Contoured Tour-Pak Luggage rack' if I'm not mistaken. Part no.79148-06.
I was going to order the same rack in my last Zanotti order but held off at the last second. I was concerned about how to beef up the lid in case I really wanted to use it one day.
The rack looks great on the leather tourpak.
Do a search, or perhaps the same guy will see this post. I'll see if I can find the thread.
