The mount itself is as bullet proof as can be made, the Hard drive iPodsdon't last long on a solid mount, best to leave them in a saddle bag or a soft pouch. The Nano's are flash drive so the Vibe's don't affect them and because they're flash drives, batt. life is unbelievable! If you decide to get a Nano and need a mount give me a hollar! Phil I was looking at your windshield pics looks great, just a little more to the right and you could have seen the perch the Zumo is stilling on
I was on a mission to Lowe's Sunday morning to have fun and find a simple, low cost way to mount my cell phone and or MP3 player. Found theseblack plastic cable holders at Lowes for $3 that snap on the bars. They come in various sizes so you can use no matter what you bar size is. Mine is 1.25 inch. Since they fit snug, I did NOT have to, but DID wrap a small piece of wiring around the clamp bottom (you can't even see it!) and twisted the wire together so it is super tight on my bar. It is NOT coming off. Plus there is a little ledge on them that stops them from moving down too far. Almost too perfect for what I was needing.
They already have a small/flat mounting area on them with 3m double sticky tape to attach velcro or whatever you want to hold your item. I already had a "quick release" plate (just flat piece of plastic) from Techmount. This allows me to not have to use velcro. I added 2 small screws to the double sticky tape base plate to be double sure thatin the future I won't have to worry about them not being sticky!
This set up was so easy it was scary. Looks nice too! You can't even see the plastic cable holders that hold the whole thing to my bars! I simply mounted them on the lower/flat part of the bar by the ignition key. You can do left or right side.
If you want I can snap pictures tonight and show you. Total cost about $5.
I'll be designing one soon. My goal is something that will provide some vibration dampening along with a locking top and some form of waterproofing. Wish me well and hopefully the fabrication effort will be swift and quick!
