Paint while on the bike
No, I don't mean riding; just leaving everything on the bike to get some personalizing paint done. Is it expecting too much? Anybody had it done? Can you get that kind of thing done at Daytona? Or where else can you get it done?
There'll be a bunch of pinstripers at Bike Week. They can do pinstripes, graphics, etc. while you watch. Changin' the color of your bike prolly ain't an option............
As said above, you can pinstripe where it's a gloss paint applied over an existing finish but to me that's a cheesy approach. Only takes a couplehours to pull the tins and drop them off to an air brush artistor real painter.Any kind of graphic means wet sanding the clear coat so the new graphics or paint can adhere and make a chemical bond to the base, then when the paint is finished, the entire part is clear coated, cut, and polished. That cannot be done on the bike in any way shape or form.
You can pinstripe or paint something like flames for example using 1 Shot enamal on urethane because it requires no clear coat. It is done all the time, especially on semi trucks. For any urethane applications you have to at least scuff the clear, paint your graphics and reclear. This (at least if I'm doing the painting) would require removing the tin from the bike. The masking involved to contain the overspray would take more time then to just remove the parts. AL
anything not sprayed would work fine. When you start spraying you start creating overspray . That is uncontrolled and will show up anywhere you don't want it.

Glideman is right on. I've been painting, pinstriping and airbrushing for some time now and unless you want less than stellar results, pull the metal off the scoot. Sure, you can have a pinstriper hack and slash (all due respect) at a rally but WTF? You can blast a can of Rusto from WalMart and call it a paint job.....I guess it's all in what you want, expect and can afford.
Stop down on Beach St. where the Harley dealer is located. Out back you will find Davies pinstripping and custom painting. He did some flame work on my ultra last year. I like what he did a lot! Stand back and just watch his work and ask any questions you got. He let me bring my bike up just outside his gate and he came out and gave me some idea's. You can also check his web page to see what and for who he has worked for. Worth checking out.

Painting on top of the clearcoat is not a hack job. The best in the country have done it this way for decades. Mike Lavallee, Wizard, Dan Kite (all of which have been featured in pinstriping and varios books on 'how-to' to name a few). Airbrushers have to clear, pinstripers do not have to. One-Shot lettering enamel is DESIGNED to adhere to the clear. As long as the wax has been removed and you show it some TLC it will be on there for at least 10-15 years. Once you get into clearing the price of a nice pinstripe job quadruples. Myself and my family have been doing it this way for over 50 years with thousands of thrilled customers, and I've seen bikes my grandfather striped that date back 30 years. If a quality striper does it, and the surface has been prepped correctly you have nothing to worry about.
