I know, I know, the question has been asked a million times, I know, I've read some and now forget! And the search function, well, forget it, you guys already know!
Anyway, changing my '08 Road King over to synthetic in all three holes. I'm going with Mobil 1 or Amsoil in the motor, but what is suggested in the tranny and primary? I was leaning towards 75-90 Mobil 1 in the primary, but what in the trans?? Sorry for asking again, and thanks in advance for the replies!
I think you maybe stuck on Mobil1, its not a bad oil. I have used it. But since have gone with Red Line in all three holes. 20/50 in engine, Heavy Duty Shockproof gear oil in tranny, and MTL in primary.
Mobil One V-Twin for me. Any synthetic is probably good, though. Also any high-quality dino oil. Just change it and the filter when recommended. A GM engineer I know, who worked at the Tonowanda, NY plant and studied oils, big-block Chevy engine development on the dynomometer, etc., told me many Formula One auto racing teams run Mobil One, regardless of who they are sponsored by. He also told me that Castrol Syntec is identical chemically. He said those oils had the two best high-pressure packages he had studied. That means that the place of highest pressure stress in the engine, the lifter face/camshaft lobe interface, was best protected by these oils. Smokey Yunick, likewise, stated the same about the Formula One teams using Mobil One no matter whose oil sponsorship sticker was on the car. If Mobil One is good enough for those two guys, itis good enough for me! It is in my: 1970 SS-454 Chevelle LS-6 with 510 HP, my 1994 Camaro Super Gas Drag Race Car with 900 HP, my 1986 Chevy Pickup shop truck, my daughter's 2002 Tahoe, wife's 2003 Suburban, my 2008 GMC Duramax Turbo-Diesel, and my 2008 Street Glide.
I put Mobile 1 VT 20-50, Redline heavy shockproof in the tranny and HD formula plus in the primary at the 1,000 mile service. Took the bike to my dealer, handed them the oil and they took off the price of the HD oils I would have been given. That was in June 2007, I now have over 16,000 miles on my Street Glide and change engine oil every 5,000 and the other two at 10,000. No problems, engine runs cooler, is quieter and the tranny shifts smoother. Get Redline at many independent shops, but haven't found it at my WalMarts. I don't like synthetic oil in the primary. Think it's to slick for the clutch, but that's just me.
