John, I agree 100%. The locals have taken a license to hunt down the bikers and extract as much $ as we have. Do I need to spend 3 to 5 X the amount of money to rent a room? I think not. In the 70's & 80's Daytona was OK until they thought it was their right to start extorting.
I have a better idea, Leesburg until the locals once again start taking advantage & getting too smart. I was arrested for DUI last year, the only problem is I do not drink nor do I do drugs. When I went to court, the evidence supported my claim of 0% of each. (urinalysis and breathalyzer). The case was thrown out by the Judge. $3,500 later and 2 part days in jail of which I can not get back. My crime was driving at 1:am in Port Orange coming back from dinner in Daytona. No More Daytona for me! I guess the cops did not figure on a person (working on the %'s) who does not drink & et. al at night. My 2 coppers

Wow, that's quite a perspective on the event. Thanks for sharing. Sometimes I forget about the more practical side of life.
Most major events have deteriorated to the point where it is just an extortion racket. I will never go to Sturgis again or any major eventlike that becauseit's just so crowded. I am always looking for someplace different to go and this year am going to Moab Utah on the weekend of the 23rd of August. I have never been there but it appears to be a small rally with outstandingscenery. I do drink moderately but the last thing I need is the expense of an out of state jail.

While I was set up in Sturgis on Main Street, I saw the police with an Aluminum Step Van with a permanently mounted shelf and a curb side sliding window (kind of like at Taco Bell) driving around. When the police got someone, the Van would pull up and you can pay your fine right then and there. Very convenient. Last year I will ever go to Sturgis! It is a great T-Shirt and food court event that people who own bikes go to. Just not me! I'll buy my t-Shirts in a store.
