I recently had the 1k service done at the dealer (bought the bike from them). I told the service writer I would do the oils/filter, steering bearing grease, and a couple other things. They were fine with that, adjusted the price, and noted my bike has had the initial service completed.

Worked for me...

I am leading on doing it myself...I had to do the streeing Head Bearing Grease. The only problem I seem to have is the rear brake nosie which I have read is a common with the 08 Ultras

Do it yourself. Not only do you save money, but the dealership by my house you have to make an appointment and then they keep the bike for a week. I do buy the oil and filter from the dealership because the keep computer records of the purchase. That way I have reasonalble proof the work was done in case there's warranty work necessary.

Use the money you save to buy a J&S lift, service manualand misc tools. It's more fun doing it yourself and you know everything got done. Save big $$$ over time. .02

I paid for the 1000 miles service and then thought about it. $300ish is a lot for what they do at the service intervals.

Sorry for the double post but another bonus of doing it yourself is you can use better products. You can put Redline (what I use) or Amsoil in which is awesome as well.

I don't know about the more fun doing it yourself part, but I'm not into stuff like that personally! I have no patience, and the first time something wouldn't go back together, I'd get frustrated and break something most likely!

That said, the dealerships definately charge you way too much money for that service! If you don't want to do it yourself, find a reputable indy shop nearby, and you'll get it for about half price most likely. I'm getting my 10k done in a week or so (if I ever make it home!), and I believe that service at the dealer is pushing close to $500; I'm getting it done for about $230 at an indy.

Thank for all the input, I do have a lift and most all the tools you could want, might even give me a reason to get a new tool chest...I have no problem doing the oil/tranny and primary myself and I perfer to do it myself so once again I guess I need to get my hands on a service manual and start a log book on all the maint done..Thanks again...oh yea what brake pads do you guys recommend. I know I read about it on here somewhere but can't remember

Thanks
