lean running concerns
I just bought a K&N high flow HD-1499 air filter which is a stock replacement. Will I need to reprogram the ECM or is it not necessary ? My thinking is the stock air box is what restricts the airflow on the intake side. Everything is stock on the bike. Thanks for your input. Judd
Think of it this way....imagine a run of 2 inch water pipes. All the sudden, you change the first pipe to 4 inches, but the rest remains 2 inches. Even though the first section of pipe is larger, you will still be restricted by the 2 inch pipe sections and get no more water than before out the other end of the pipe. (assuming pressures are the same).
When you do move away from the stock exaust to one allowing more air flow, and that could be the Screamin Eagle slip-on mufflers, or a move to a true dual header system with those or other mufflers, then you will be in a situation where you will need to ensure that you are not running to lean. All your piping, so to speak, will now be of the 4 inch variety (example above).
The two most popular options (and there are many) for tuning hardware are the Power Commander III and the SERT (Screamin Eagle Race Tuner). You can search for and find a lot of information on both on this forum. But a Dyno run utilizing an oxygen sensor during the runs is a verified way of dialing-in the tuning of either the PCIII or the Sert. Engine purists seem to gravitate toward the SERT, while folks that want to tune it and forget it and ride it, use the PCIII. Here locally, I have found more tuners specializing in the PCIII. But it sounds like you are interested in making your bike run it's best, so good luck and have fun. My Road King has an older PCII, while my 04 ultra utilized the SERT for tuning.

Why does the Motor have an O2 sensor?
These high operating temperatures can be mostly attributed to the new closed loop operating mode of the EFI system. The OEM closed loop operating mode relies on narrow band oxygen sensors to keep the air fuel ratio at 14.7:1.
Does the EFI closed loop system not read the exhaust and keep it at 14.7:1?
Everytime I read these posts I have to question what is being said.
It's either a closed loop system or it's not.
If it is, whats the problem with what you put on the bike? It will keep it at the air fuel ratio of14.7:1.
Yes or no?
Enquiring minds want to know.
don't plan on to many mods.....

Here's some interesting reading and sounds like an option to the fule managment if you

Let us know what you think of the Niterider's IEDS. Been thinking seriously about those myself.
For now, I'm happy withthe stock setup on my 08 RG, just want to cool the engine some by enrichening the fuel mix.
If anyone else is using these, give us a report.
Thanks

Yup...Read the thread....There have been some real world tests done by the members using an inferred Thermometer. Everything positive....nothing negative yet..
