Default Stereo Install

Has anyone put a stereo in a EGS that was not a Sony or HD? I don't see the point of spending all the $$ to get a sony or HD stereo just so I can use the thumb controls. If you have done this and have any regrets please let me know. Also, how much would it cost to get the mounting bracket? Any tips or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks for your help! Bryan

If you have a ipod check out the Alpine Ida-x001 on ebay. Thats what I'll be getting when I get my Dead Center Fairing.

IMHO the thumb controls are a big plus.

The main reason I went with the Biketronics kit was just because ease of installation. The Sony might not have been my first choice, but it is nice. Everything just plugs in, no cutting, splicing or making.....Took me about 2 hrs, so it was worth the few extra $$ to me.

Not sure of what amplification device you would use for an iPod, etc. A Sony headunit costs about 139, speakers about 40 and an antenna about 20. You install those with a mounting kit from Biketronics, for example, that costs 50, hook-up the power and ground to power the headunit and you are good to go.

I had that set-up on my police model EG for about a year, then installed the civilian handlebar controls with the audio/radio controls, bought the Biketronics interface unit for 150, and have enjoyed the convenience and safety of the thumb controls ever since, especially the Automatic Volume Control that adjusts the radio volume based on engine speed--very convenient when stop lights are encountered.

A Biketronics "Retro Radio" package costs about 500 and includes everything needed, including Hog Tunes speakers--doesn't seem (to me) like an exhorbitant or even excessive amount of money for the convenience and safety of using the thumb controls.

There are wireless alternatives to have thumb controls that are less expensive than the Biketronics interface unit derived from automotive steering wheel radio controls, but I have no experience with them.

I've got a sony 5710 stereo on my bike, mounted with the biketronics mount, hogtunes front and rear, also the rain guard coverfrom biketronics too. no thumb controls on mine, former police bike. sounds and looks just fine, and at a fraction of the cost of doing a factory HD stereo, this spring i'll be installing my new zumo 550,so i'll be playing MP3's loaded on a SD card through the zumo, and will be able to get voice directions as well.
I did have a problem with the bike tronic's mount, they sent out a second set of mounts and i just kept the two mounts that matched the best, sent back the not such a good match one's. thumb controls would be great, maybe someday

Thanks for your input guys! Still not sure exactly what I am going to do. I would be happy with just a MP3 player hooked to a set of faring speakers, but have not found that option yet either. Bryan

Mike, you just need a friend or two--one who has an EG Classic who installed the HD cruisecontrol, and another, or the same one, who installed the HD CB--they will provide the handlebar switches/harness. And then you can make up the Base Audio Connector so the Biketronics interface can control the handlebar switches. Let me know if you ever want to do this as I've done mine and a buddy's '06 TPI.

The alpine IDA-x001 controls like a ipod same display as an ipod and has a large control button (good for gloves). http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...p;i=500IDAX001
