Wanting to ride bikes to Alaska this summer. Has anyone made the trip? How much time should be allowed to travel to Anchorage from Montana? Plan on taking the ferry from Anchorage down to Washington. Anyone have any tips or things to avoid?
Have a friend that did it and he said it was a great trip but he would rent a bike if he did it again.
Lots of road construction every where, lots of dirt / gravel roads. He said something about the summer being the only time they can do road work because of the all thesnow in the winter. Took him a couple weeks of cleaning to get his bike back in shape.
Hope this little bit of info helps
I took a cruise ship to Alaska last June. Every local we talked to said they couldn't believe how good the weather was (every tour we took came complete with rain gear and umbrellas, if that indicates anything!). In Skagway, we took a bus to the border at White Pass, then rode the scenic train back down. On the way up, six bikes passed our bus...four Ultras, two BMWs. The further up the mountain we went the worse the weather got. At the border, it was raining some of the coldest rain I've ever felt. It had snowed there two days before, so the road was pretty bad with slush, etc. The riders had stopped to clear the border, so I talked with two of the Ultra riders. They said getting up there was a nightmare, freezing cold and slippery (and the sun was shining with a temp of around 75 in Skagway, just a few miles down). One of the border officers said it was worse up ahead. I hope they made it ok wherever they were going. When I got back to Skagway I asked at the Harley shop (small, no bikes, just accessories, but nice folks), and they said those were pretty normal weather conditions for June up at the pass...
If you're going, I'd say being prepared for anything would be a good tactic. Have fun, and be safe.
a freind did it last summer he did an article thats in the december or jan hogtales think he was gone 4 weeks he left from milwaukee and did the canada thing too
