Default Brake fluid

Book calls for dot 4 brake fluid,but all I can find is dot 3 an 4 Valoline makes it.Is this ok to use or do I have make a trip to the stealer

There is a chemical difference between the two types. You could have some component seal failures (unlikley) if you use dot 3 in a dot 4 system. Also dot 4 has a higher heat rating then dot 3.

You should be able to find dot 4, I'd keep looking.

dot 4 try auto zone or an o'rieliys they should have it

Absolutely do not use dot 3. you need dot 4.

Didn't they use DOT 5 for a couple of years?

I should really change out my brake fluid.........27000 miles on it so far, I'm sure it's pretty nasty.

What years used which fluid?

I think they changed from DOT 5 to DOT 4 in 2005.

I am still using DOT 5
Do not use DOT 3 ( seal failure )

My '04 Ultra uses dot 5 (silicone). Do not mix as others have said.

Vavloline an castrol make a brake fluid that says on the bottle for dot 3 an dot 4 or exceeds dot 3 an dot 4 , I hit 4 auto parts stores today an no dot 4 brake fluid. Is it just bad timing hitting the stores .
