Brake fluid
There is a chemical difference between the two types. You could have some component seal failures (unlikley) if you use dot 3 in a dot 4 system. Also dot 4 has a higher heat rating then dot 3.
You should be able to find dot 4, I'd keep looking.

I should really change out my brake fluid.........27000 miles on it so far, I'm sure it's pretty nasty.

Vavloline an castrol make a brake fluid that says on the bottle for dot 3 an dot 4 or exceeds dot 3 an dot 4 , I hit 4 auto parts stores today an no dot 4 brake fluid. Is it just bad timing hitting the stores .
