Default Front Fork Installation

I have ordered a HD maintenance manual to guide me through the process, have plenty of tools, and am completely mechanically inclined. Given that, I am about to swap out my forks (2006 Road King Classic) and install a chrome front end package. Anyone out there ever attempt this and if so, what are the possible problems one might run into in such a job? Anything that might not be covered in the manual?

Thanks!

Just did it...... Removed the entire fork assembly, and had to drive out the left one with a rubber mallet because of some corrosion between the triple tree and the fork cap. Ended up damaging the threads and had to buy a new fork cap and fork cap nut, another 60 bucks well spent.

If you are just putting on chrome forks, you don't have to remove them from the triple trees at all. You can do everything from the bottom of the inner stanchion tubes and not have to deal with taking them out of the trees.

Get yourself a 6" peice of 1.5" pvc pipe, cut a slice into it so you can get it over the upper stanchion tube...........that is what you will use to set the fork seal.

You'll need a long 6mm hex-socket, that will loosen the bolts in the bottom of the forks.

Other then that, it's a pretty basic job..........just be careful with the fender when it's off.

It's one of those job, once you get into it youll find it's easier than it looks. I personally like to take the tube out of the tripple tree since its so easy to do then I can work on my work bench. I also change the fork seals when I take them apart, since their only a few bucks.

Thanks for all the great advice. I would have thought I might be in over my head attempting such a job. Seems quite simple. It sure beats paying the dealer 300-350 to do it.
