I mounted my controller between the speedo and tach.
I got the controller from this website. It is the model# SMCOAX (single mounted coax). They make a dual unit as well. Very easy install, I could give you a hand installing it if you want.
Thanks Zach. Saw a guy Saturday who simply mounted his portable controller on his bars. I really like the idea of being free from hooking the controller to my chaps. I'll need a dual controller since I have a full set. your mount looks good there. I'll have to look and see if there is enough room there for 2 *****. If not, i'll probably look for a place on the fairing to mount them. Might look good to mount them just to the right of the LH speaker between the speaker and gauges. I'm thinking on the LH side so I can get to them with my left hand. What do you think?
Thanks for the link. I'll take a look. The price is about the same as Gerbing's.
BTW, my Klockwerks 12" should be here today. I'm going to take lots of pics and write a review after I install it. Can't wait!!!
Wait, I'm confused why you need the dual controller I assumed it was for you and your wife's gear. I didn't think you needed a dual controller for the full suit? I thought the pants and gloves plugged into the jacket, and the jacket was the only thing that plugged into the bike.
Mounting on the left (or center) makes the most sense. You should have room between the speaker and gauges, but I can't remember if that area is perfectly flat. I'll take a look when I get home. It needs to be really flat for the **** to move freely and for the controller to mount solidly.
I have a dual controller so I can adjust the pants separately from the jacket. Otherwise, you get too hot on the top. Seems like the pants draw more amps then the jacket. The guy I met, actually had his rewired so the socks / gloves were on one circuit and the jacket / pants on another.
I hate to admit this but . . . my wife doesn't have heated stuff yet. She has a very heavy one piece HD riding suit that keeps her nice and warm.
I have rewiremine so my jacket and socks are on one controler button and my Gloves G# Gerbings are on the other comtrol buttom. With lowers and my boots I don't need too hot of socks and with a jacket liner I don't need real hot coat.
On your hook up are you guys mounting the heat controler **** on the dash and the main plug in to the jacket off the battery?
I have also seen Gerbings duel controler velcroed to the center gas tank consoul. Easy to reach and secure and in rain it can be removed or tucked under the jacket.
One thing to check is are the controlers water resistant in case of rain?? If they are hot in the rain a short could result in blown fuses. thats why I don't like the permanant mount ideals let us know what you find out..
Sorry I don't have any pictures, but a friend of mine mounted his permantent dual controller in the the 2 blank switch plates on his EGS, one on each side of the Ignition switch. I was thinking about getting the fixed mount he told me to be careful in aligning them in there, he messed one up and had to get an extra blank plate, but it looks good and is clean. As far as water a little silicone to seal the install worked for him. He has had that set up for a couple years.
I have a dual controller so I can adjust the pants separately from the jacket. Otherwise, you get too hot on the top. Seems like the pants draw more amps then the jacket.
For Gerbing's Cascade Extreme suit, the pants draw up to 3.6 amps, the jacket 6.4 amps, so the pants definitely don't draw more current. I'd think Gerbing would try their best to even out the heating level on their various different garments, however, just to avoid that complication for people who, for whatever reason, don't want to use a dual controller.
The issue with using heated clothing on a HD tourer is that there's just not that much protection from the elements on the legs, especially the tops of the legs and knees. The cold air just blasts right through there unimpeded, as opposed to my GL1800, where my legs are totally behind the fairing. On my UC, I always need to turn up the pants higher than the jacket to compensate for all that added airflow over my legs.
We mounted the dual controlller in a Marse Harley Specific Tank bag.
Plug the tank bag into the lead off the battery on the RS of the bike, then plug the two (2) leads from the jacket liner into the twin controller leads.
Works like a charm. Easy to remove when the weather get warm or we are staying at a motel/hotel for the night.
Willl try to post pictures toward the end of the week, if anyone is interested.
