I must agree let her drop and dent a 2500 bike instead of a 10k or 20k bike , then when shes comfortable riding move her up

Now if she is sure she's going through with it. While she is at the riders course go get her bike. Offer this suggestion for a bike as well. I had a Ninja 250 it would do 100 mph. But it was controlable. Would cruise at 75 all day got 70 miles to a gallon. They have not changed in years cheap parts. Really lite bike. EASY to ride. Great gearing. Great standard seating position.Looks full sized from a distance. Then again a freind of mine 200 lb man rides his Rebel 250 all over Ga no preoblems. Nice bike for the price. But we do give him a little crap. Especially when the 110 female rider pulls along side on her Low riderand says nice girls bike. But all kidding aside he has 60,000 miles on the thing. It will keep up cruising back roads. Just dont put pipes on it they sound funny.

Well after not riding for 27 years I decided to take the Rider's Course to get back in the swing of riding. My wife, son and I took the course at the same time. On the last day of class wife stated if I can drive a bike I'm not riding bitch. So I bought and took delivery of a 2008 Pacific Blue Ultra for myself, a 2008 Copper Head Red/Red hot Deluxe for my wife and 2008 Denim Black Street Bob for my son. We have driven 575 miles since last Friday. If I don't hurry she leaves me behind.

Seriously though what is right for one may not be right for another. I would say get them what they feel comforatable with and build their confidence level. Keep them riding and learning and they will want more. My wife rides everywhere now, even to run errands and is always ready to go for a putt at the drop of a hat! In fact we are heading out the door right now!
+1 Its all about her....let her get the little bike and move up....

Its not a waste of money if she learns to love riding

My wife took the basic riders course and started out on an 883 sportster. We had it lowered with HD rear lowering shocks and she was very comfortable with it. She is about 5'4" tall and could sit flat footed at stops. It actually sat a little lower than the 883 L with the lowering shocks added. She rode it for a year to the day and traded for a Soft Tail Deluxe.

I still think she could handle the 883 just have it lowered.

Jerry, That is awesome. When my girls get old enough, I am sure they will love to have a bike and go riding with the wife and I. My wife was looking at the deluxe the other day. She really likes it, and I think it is a sharp looking bike. I would be happy if she gets one, which means I could ride it from time to time. I tell ya, the riding bug has really hit her hard. She wants to ride even more than I do, LOL. Thing is, with us, we have two young daughters (11 and 8). We want to take more rides together, but we can not leave the girls alone, and taking them to the grandparents is not all that convient.I have been riding for over 22 years, and would love for my girls to ride with me. The wife was nervous about letting them ride on the back of my bike, but since getting her license, she has had a change of heart. There is no way she is ready for a passenger, but both her parents ride. Her dad has a goldwing, which my youngest will ride on, and my oldest can ride with me. Her mom (after giving her bike to my wife) went out and got herself a Honda shadow... So, we are planning to go for a true family ride. Just today we were out looking for a pair of helemts for our girls... I sure hope her dad agrees (he may not be comfortable with it, but he is a very good rider, and I trust him). Man... a riding family is just freakin' awesome.... Congratulations... You are a lucky man being able to combinemy two loves... Family and riding...

Wife decided she wanted to ride. Told her if she did well on the course, we'd get her a bike. She tok the course and did well and got her endorsement. Went looking and all bikes seemed to tall (she's 5 foot nothing). She decided to look at the Buell Blast, which is what she would have riden had she taken the course from Harley. It seemed to fit well and we found a really good buy on a 2000 with just a little over 1000 miles. Picked up via trailer, brought it home and she took her inaugural ride in an empty parking lot. She had only ridden 10 minutes and was having fun when she forgot all she learned, grabbed a handful of brake, and did a classic high-side. The bike landed in the grass and threw her onto her left shoulder. She suffered a briken arm right below the socket. That was last November. She couldn't work for two months.

Anyway, she informed me today that she has decided she will not be driving a bike again, so I need to get ride of the Blast. Oh, well. At least she still wants to ride with me.

My gal took the coarse two years ago, passed with flying colors, so we went bike shopping, looked at a ton of bikes, It came down to the sportster and a V-star 650 custom, after sitting on both for a bunch of times she wen't with the v-star, was a little pissed but hey its her money, two days after getting the v-star we were in a parking lot practicing a nother guy brought his gal up for the same thing on an 06 sporster, after talking for a bit they switched bikes, my gal hated the sportster and his gal loved the v-star, the v-star short of power is an excellant first bike rides really smooth lightweight, Not top heavy and real reasonably priced, now when we buy her her first hd she'll be ready and confidant and ready to go. Just my .02, T
