It's really not all that unusual - my dealer's head mechanic said he's never been to school to train with the SERT and doesn't plan on it. Too complicated - the Power Commander takes care of all of their problems and does a good job (his words). I only know of one dealer (45 miles away) who recommends the SERT. Here's a case where the device is only as good as the person who uses it. Almost have to visit a dedicated race tuner to have it done right - that's the only time I envy you guys who live near large population centers.

What I think confuses many of us is that many on this forum refer to the SERT as a part - like something that would be installed on the bike. Unless I'm still confused, the SERT is actually just software that you purchase - comes with a cable to connect your laptop to the bike's ECM module. Also, I was told that this software is "configured to the VIn number" during the initial software installation.

Please pardon my ignorance. I have an 05 Ultra and I just ordered K&N air filter and T-Rex true duals. I've been reading this forum and there seems to be a consensus that with EFI I should have my Ultra Dynoed using SERT.

I stopped by my dealer in SLC and got deer eyes in the headlights. He said they had a dyno but never heard of SERT. They use Power Commander. He said his guy was good and I should bring him the information on SERT and they'd do it. Trouble is I'm clueless as to what it is or how to get it.
Can someone please give me a link and/or help me get educated so I can get this done right.
I like my dealer and would prefer to stay there as opposed to going elsewhere. I may end up with the Power Commander if I can't get sufficient detail. I love my ride and want to do it right!
I appreciate any and all comments.
Bob
Just wondering, is your dealer in slc an authorized H-D dealer or an independent. If they are independent, that explains why they played dumb with the "sert" jmo

Hey Snarley!

Love your flags! Got both on my ride! As for the Dealer, yes there are four dealerships in the area and the guy that owns all four races a Screamin’ Eagle Nitro Harley. Go figure!

So how does this typically work. I buy the SERT software and install it myself from my PC. Then I take my bike to a dealer/tuner to get it on a dyno, how can they tune it if the software is on my PC. Do I just bring him the CD with the software?

Or the other case: I have the dealer install the Sert and tune my bike. I paid for the sert so I would hope they just give me the CD and the file of the MAP they installed. Is this the way it works?

So every time the dealer installs a Sert. They install the software on their PC, tune the bike, then they un-install it. Then they re-install it for the next guy.

Just trying to understand the process.

Also, I was told that this software is "configured to the VIn number" during the initial software installation.

The SERT is a software program and can be loaded on a laptop or PC. There is a cable, actually there are 2 cables and a box. The first cable goes from the laptop or pc to the box. The second cable goes from the box to the ECM. When you use the SERT software and upload a new map to your bike it records the VIN stored in the ECM to the box. The box is then "married" to that ECM (VIN). The SERT software can be installed on any computer and the MAP's can be minipulated on any computer BUT to upload them you have to have the box that has been married to your ECM.

Now if you bring your bike to a dealer and they use their PC (SERT software) to write a custom MAP, they will need your box to load it into your ECM. ALWAYS make certain that they save the MAP on a disk or burn it to a CD and give it to you. You can not retrieve a MAP from a ECM and if you ever make a small change you will want to start with your existing MAP.

The Box is what cost all the money when you buy a SERT. You can buy the SERT software seperately for about $20 but it will do you NO good with out the Box. After the box is married to your ECM and will not work on any other ECM's (bikes).

If you have any other questions regarding the SERT feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them.

Terry,

My dealer ordered p/n 32136-05A @ $211. The 32107-01D is $450. Any idea what's up?

Bob,

It's just incredible. Another dealer that doesn't know what a SERT is. Try this. "I would like a Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner" installed on my bike. It is a genuine Harley Davidson part and I would like to keep my bike all Harley. If they don't know what a Race Tuner is then like them or not, I'd find a different dealer. There is nothing wrong with the Power Commander. Your dealer probably has a DynoJet Dyno so he probably has a deal to only install DynoJet Power Commanders (PCIII). Actually this is a violation of the Harley Davidson Franchise Rules but.......who cares about that. I just can't stand it when a dealer tries to make customers look stupid.

Here is the info you need. Tell your dealer to look at page 31 in the Screamin' Eagle Pro Racing Parts Catalog. Part #32107-01D. Also read this before you go there: HERE

All this talk about SERT

I have a couple of things that I would like to know more about,

1.) Is the SERT plug n play or do I need to splice wires? If I have to splice wires then the party is over!!!

2.) I have a brand new 06 SG, I have never been a big fan of slip ons, if I'm gonna do it then I am going to change the whole pipe. I am considering a set of Rineharts, so how much extra HP are we talking?

3.) Set of pipes is about $850.00 the SERT is about $400.00....seems like a lot of money for a few ponies?

4.) Does the 06 SG really need anything off the showroom floor? I hear a lot of talk about heat problems. But if this bike will run fine in traffic then I may just leave it alone. The only time I am in serious traffic is Laconia weekend, other than that I'm never in any real traffic.

These forums are GREAT!!!!

Thanks all
