I purchased the bike a month ago, 03RKC with 3700 miles, 95" Kit, stock pipes. Put about 10 miles on it before Saturday due to living in Central NY. Seemed very smooth but only jaunted around town. Sat I installed the Rinehart True Duals and PCIII. I got about 100 miles on it yesterday and around 65 I feel a funny vibration that makes the roof of my mouth tingle and top of my head feel weird??? I know sounds retarded so I am ready for the flaming but just wondering if anyone has ever felt this. I did notice the head pipe out of therear cylinder is bright blue under the heat shield and the front cylinder head pipe under the heat shield has not turned any color?? I got the PCIII from Jamie at Fuel Moto and it seems find, little pop on decel but still close. Any suggestions?? I was thinking of adding some half inch rubber on the rear exhaust mount and some on the bottom mount on the other side to see if the pipes added the vibration. Also the guy I bought it from had it strapped right to the crate that the bike came on from harley so could the tires still have a little flat spot? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Well, vibes on a Road King at speed are not that common. When you rode the first 10 miles before the new pipes and PCIII, did you get it up to 65MPH? If not, then we can't make a complete diagnosis. The problem may not be related to the new parts.
Since you just bought it and it was crated, do you know how long it sat and in what kind of conditions? Have you checked the tires for condensation? I know it sounds weird, but condensation can form inside the tire, especially if they are constantly moving from warm to cold and back. Also, check the motor mounts and stabilizer bars. It could be something barely making contact with the frame. At idle, do you get any "hard" jolts through the frame? It's kind of hard to describe but I once had a rocker cover bolt back out and start hitting the frame on my FXR. You could feel it and it was like someone rapping on the frame with a bat.
Didn't really notice it before. At idle it does not have any more vibration than any I have seen. I guess I'll put some more miles on it and see if being strapped to a crate made a flat spot in the tires. I;ll give it a good once over tonight and see if anything looks out of place. Thanks
The rear cylinder will always run hotter than the front. Some engineering issue like airflow. The newer bikes are leaner than the 03 and they have a lot of heat in the back cylinder. Could you be toooo lean?
Tingle in the roof of your mouth does indicate a High frequency vibration. I would doubt that would come from a Tire. I would suggest you check your Exhaust. Loosen everything then allign it and retighten. I think your exhaust is touching something. Maybe a clamp moving with engine movement? I had a car that did this to me at around 8000 rpm. It would also make make me feel nautious.
I think I have read here before that you need to check the exhaust , most have found that the head pipes are touching somewhere on the engine causing your problem.
recheck the way the exhaust is mounted and not rubbing anywhere I believe there is a sequence for tightening it. Also check the front engine mount they have been a spot for vibration
Good point on the exhaust! I did notice the crush gaskets for the Rineharts are about half as thick as the stock harley ones. I wonder if I got one side to tight and drew it in uneven?? I don't have a torque wrench to I did the self guaged finger torque! lol. I will loosen everything up tomo and check but there is no leaks so if I undo the pipes should I grab some new crush gaskets?? Thanks for all the help!
