Default Streetglide Idle

I picked up a fuel injected Streetglide the first of Feb. and after about 200 miles the idle speed dropped to 5-600 rpms. after a warm up. Seems to run okay on the road. No mods. on the bike yet. I've talked to several people and they say give it 1000 miles to cure itself. I've seen a similar question previously on this forum but no answer to the problem.

Can't believe this is unique to SG's. Any ideas?

I believe it's supposed to idle min 1000rpm's anything less and the bike doesn't charge right. Better get looked at if I was you.

Yep, 1000 rpm is where it should be. Running it that low is not good for the motor (could starve the motor of oil). I would take it back ASAP... Unless it’s your tach that is off? My bike would run at 700-800 rpm in the so called "SAFE MODE" when the engine gets super hot and runs on one cylinder. But 600 is awfully low if its under normal conditions, not right...

The SG will not cure itself. What probably happened is the "Heat Management System" kicked in if it was warm where you were riding. If that's the case, get used to it. That's one of the reasons most of us are going to a SERT or PCIII with a Dyno tune. Trying to get more fuel deliverd to make the engine run cooler. These engines are way to lean from the factory which equates to more heat. That's why the MOCO lowered the parameters for the HMS in '06.

Why not give us a little more info on when this happened. Were you in stop and go traffic of moving along, outside temp , type of riding. It could be the heat management system, but it could also be a tight engine that's just hotter than it should be.

Stop and go traffic along the beach in California. 5-6:30 about 60 F. temp. Bike ran well for the 1st 10-15 minutes. Motor seemed warm, my temp. gauge(air temp.) showed about 110F. Once the bike felt warm the idle dropped and the bike would act like it was going to stall. As I gave it more gas it was okay. Started with the idle drop with around 200 miles on the bike. I'm out of town so can't get to the bike but will check with my dealer Friday.

It's definitly the "Heat Management System" kicking in. You ain't seen nuttin' yet. When it gets hotter the bike will idle rougher 'cause the injecters fire differently. The bike is even capable of stalling out if the temp goes up to high. Read your manual. There is a section describing the different levels of HM.

Thanks! I'll check the manual and get the bike to the dealer before it creates any more problems.

Bluesgub, The dealer will tell you "it's normal". I know you won't be happy with that answer, I know that I was certainly very frustrated the first few weeks with my SG.
I have since done the modifications suggested by some members of this forum. So far, so good but it's still very cool in NJ. The real test will come in a few months when the weather gets warmer.
