Default Stock Pipes

I am having a debate with my son who has a sporty with ultra-loud pipes. My wife and I are buying and Ultra this week and was planning on going with everything stock to begin with and then customize it as we move forward. One of the reasons is that we are paying cash, so we don't get any benefit of deferring cost by deferring options. My major question is, does anyone out there have stock pipes or does everyone go with Vance and Heinz or Screamin' Eagle or something similar? I know it's a matter of taste, but we certainly want the Harley 'rumble'. How do the stock pipes sound?

I'm not fond of the sound of stock pipes. In my opinion they don't have the harley rumble.

Opinion only. I did not like the no sound with the stockers and I don't like real loud. I'm happy with my Bub 7 TD with Crossover; but you will find a million answers to this. The best advice I recievedwas go and listen. Recognize that when you change the pipes you will likely change the map and the air and the list goes on. But, that's when the fun begins! I'm sure you will get some good tech answers from some of the guys here. They are good and they know their stuff. I'm not even in First Grade!

I would also say that the stock pipes do not have the "Harley rumble". Like the previous posts said, there are hundreds of pipe/slip on combos for you to consider. My advice would be to leave it stock until you have spent some time around other HD's and discover the sound you like, then ask the owner what kind of exhaust it is. You will benefit from a fuel management and stage one air cleaner also.
Just remember that the money you give the dealer is only the downpayment on the bike that you really want. Stock sucks. Enjoy your ultra.

jcbpa is exactly right--go out to the HD shop this weekend...look, listen, and then ask. IMO you can't go wrong with anything from VH and Rinehart.

I did a stage one with Fuel Moto/Rush pipes and loved the sound of them, but could not get rid of the decel popping. Until I can get it on the dyno I put the stock pipes back on and had Jamie send me a map for K&N and stock pipes. I am in no hurry to get the bike dynoed as I have grown to like the sound of the stock pipes. The radio is much easier to hear!

Well, I'm kinda in the same boat! The Hen and I just swappeda '07 SuperGlide with Vance and Hines "short-shots" that in my opinion we TOOOO loud. We traded UP on an '08 Road Glide that's stock so far... 600 miles at this time, so I'm waiting on the 1000 mile mark before changing mufflers. I also ride a '61 panhead with fishtails, and kinda lean towards this set-up for the RoadGlide. So, I guess I'm also looking for some advice.

Stock is nice a quite, try these instead of spending all the money everyone else is. I got mine on ebay and they are really good, I have received several compliments. For the price I think they are the best ones out there. At this price if you don't like them you can always resale them and get more expensive ones.

I have 11k miles on my 07 Ultra with Stock pipes. My first Harley and I like the sound of the stock pipes..that is, I like the sound I hear when driving it. I have never heard my bike not from the saddle. I have heard some great sounding bikes with aftermarket pipes, however i have NO idea what they sound like from the saddle while riding them. I just dont feel like spending money trying to find a pair I like better from the driver's seat.
I just think I lot of folks get pipes so that they sound good to others when they drive by...not necessarily how theysound to the driver, after all, how the heck would you "test drive" a set of pipes to see how they sound from the saddle?

on my 08 ultra the stock pipes got a little louder after 2,000 miles. I have bad ears and didn't want loud pipes so they worked out good for me. Whatever you choose its a great bike. Enjoy
