Default Recommend Camping Gear

What's your recommendation on travel camping gear name brands/packages...looking for something to load onto my bike and not look like the beverly hillbillies rolling to sturgis.

Thanks

I've never used it on my bike but... I use to camp a LOT and I always use north face tents and mountain hardware bags. Great quality and customer service. I had a lantern incident that left holes in everything and the tent and two bags cost me 50 bucks if I remember correctly to be made like new and that included shipping.

Start with a tent. Check out this site for reviews: http://www.trailspace.com/gear/tents/

I just purchased a Eureka Pinnacle Pass 2XTA, 2 person, <5lbs, 6x19" pack size, thru amazon.com.

I have camped at Sturgis for several years, I only pack the essentials and buy the rest when I get there. Pillows, a ground sheet, etc. A friend of mine buys everything new every year and donates to the boy scouts when he leaves. Another has shipped his gear out, he has since reverted to buying everything out there. It makes for an easier ride if you only have the minimum especially if you have a few days of riding to get to Mecca.

I am kinda partial to the Eureka Timberline models. Specifically the 4 man version. Not the "XT" series, I like the short awning over the door and window. Packs down to 7 by 24. Very strong and durable and easy to setup in the weather.

For mattress I use the Therm-a-rest that self inflates and rolls up to about the same size as the tent. 1.5 to 2 inch by 72 by 26.

For a bag, I hate mummy bags even though they are the best in cold weather. So I use an appropriate weight bag for the weather that is rectangular and uses a compressable fiber. I don't use down as it sucks when wet.

All three of those I carry in Outdoor Research stuff or compressor sacks that have water proof fabric. Selected correctly you will be looking at 20 to 25 pounds of weight for all three items total.

I agree with the others on Campmor. You can get some skookum deals when they have sales.

If you asked my wife, she would recommend Master Card. According to her, Tent and Camp are both four letter words, and
God created motels for a reason.
