Default How to tell if 2000 EG has a pre Dec 99 build date?

Hi All
I am inspecting and picking up a 2000 FLHT tommorow. I have read various posts that even some 2000 bikes suffered from the cam problem. I think I read all bikes built before Dec 99
The current owner states he purchaced in June 2000 but this is no gaurnteee that the bike did not sit on the showroom floor for months. How can I tell if the engine has a post 99 build date
HD will be closed tommorro and I dont have the Vin# today. Is there a series of numbers on the
VIN that will tell me?
Thanks in Advance

The the sticker is on the frame where the VIN is located. It will have the mfg date. The sticker is on the right side of the bike, but is only visible when looking at the inside of the frame from the left side of the bike. Look in the area where the front head is located and you'll notice the sticker.

It's not the vehicle build date that you should be looking for. It is the engine build date. Any engines built before December 14 1999 will need to have the bearings replaced. to find out if the bike is one of these you need the ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER and then phone the factory to get the build date.

You have a lot of factors to gather before you should be worrying. I had a 1992 Softail with 63000 miles on it and the case was neer split in it's entire life. It ran perfect and did not leak a drop of oil or burn any. I sold it in March 2005 and both cylinders had 123 pounds of pressure. Get the bike inspected at the dealer and they will be able to tell you if you are ok. Cam bearings are not the end of the world. It's a small price to pay for a great bike if you get it at the right price.

I bought my softail in 2003 for $8300 and sold it for $10K with a lot of TLC installed. It was a great bike. Your new bagger will be awesome too...

Good luck!

That's all fine Scott, but, it has nothing to do with the bearing problems the early TWIN CAM engines had. The rear cam bearing on all engines built before Dec. 14 1999 will eventually fail causing catastrophic engine failure. Big trouble and big money to fix.
That being said if you change the bearings before they go it is not a big deal.
The question is what bearings are in this bike he is going to look at?
Were they already changed?
Don't know? Assume they will need changing and pay accordingly for the bike.
