I agree. Just get the one you want and learn on it. As you’re riding experience gets better, so will your confidence. Then, consider taking an advance riding class, to give you even more confidence and skill.

I've ridden lots of different bikes and the difference between a Road King and en Electra Glide isn't huge. They're basically the same bike but the RK sits a little lower. Oh, and the Ultra has all the goodies.

I say rent an E Glide if that's what you want. Spend a few hundred and ride one for a weekend. Put lots of miles on it. See how you feel come Monday morning.

At 6', 200 lbs, and sort of athletic, you should be able to handle one. But only YOU can answer that question.

Okay...Im 40yo 6ft' 200lbs..fairly athletic. I do not currently own a touring bike. I WILL be buying one soon..very soon! I have very little riding experience. I have the Harley Riding Course under my belt now. Concerned about my steadiness/ balancingat low speeds.
I love the Ultra Classic! but do you feel its best to start off with a lighter bike until you have road experience? Anyone out there start big?
If you like the Ultra get the Ultra and strip off the Tour Pak. If you do that the bike will not seem so top heavy. Once you are used to the bike you can put the Tour Pak back on. If you start out on a large bike eventualy you will get use to it. The good thing is you have very little experience on other (lighter) bikes, so to you the weight will seem normal since you have nothing to reference it to.

My wife had never ridden anything larger than a Vespa (other than as my co-pilot) and last week she announced she wanted to learn to drive my '05 RK Classic. I told her O.K. I would sign her up for a course. Saturday, I got up late and could not find my wife anywhere in the house, and figured she was at the neighbors 'cause her car was in the driveway. About an hour later, I hear a familiar sound outside and about fainted when I saw my wife ride my bike up the drive way! My wife is 5'6" and weighs about 120 lbs. She got up early whatched my Ride Like A Pro DVD, and went on a 75 mile test ride. I don't know whether to be pissed or proud; but if she can do it......

Pissed. That's what I would be. But I don't even mechanics riding my bike, so I do my own maintenance. I guess I'm just selfish.

I think the wise advice here is to get the one you want and not get burned on upgrades. You've already taken the classes, so take it slow and practice, practice, practice. Once you're comfortable you'll be fine on any of them.

it is the cheapest way to go, if you buy smaller you will buy sell trade until you get what you wanted in the first place. I was a MSF instructor for 6 years have seen many start small only to eventually go to the top.

Get what you want so you don't have to trade up. Most HD's are low enough not to be a problem. Don't settle for something you won't be happy with. Start BIG twin that is.
