ORIGINAL: 99igor

I replaced the shaft on mine a while back.

But I do one more thing. I drill a hole all the way through the cinch part and put a stainless steel bolt and lock nut through it. Then I can crank it down hard. Once I did that I have not had any problem since.

I did this also, and it seemed to do the trick. I also added a couple of wave washers to pick up any slack. Be sure to push the shaft from the back to ensure that there is no wiggle room back there, then tighten the shifter pinch bolt.

Watch the linkage where it attaches to the transmission input (?) shaft too. Had that rattle loose, tightened the bolt and it broke, leaving it in 1st gear. Pain in the ***, have to pull the inner primary cover to fix. Ona road trip= shop (a mile away thank God)= $$$.

Good idea 99igor.

I had mine fall off on a ride over the weekend. luckily a guy in the group saw it and stopped and picked it up. i never even knew it was gone until i slowed down to wait for them to cathc up and could use the whole floorboard. get it tight while you have the chance.

You are removing the bolt completely aren't you? Once you do, use a screwdriver in the slot to ease up the pinch of the lever.

My shifter was loose too. I pointed it out to the service rep when I took the bike in for its 1000 mile service. They knew about it as a problem with 08 bikes. They fixed it, how I do not know, but I would take it into the dealer if you are still under warranty.

Beemervet, the wave washers are a good idea. I have some that I am going to add to my RG and hopefully cut down on some of the shifter ratles on mine. I too once lost the whole heel-toe shifter and belive me it was a stressful trip home , especially having to go aroud Atlanta on I-75,I-285 & I-20.[sm=biker2.gif]

I replaced the shaft a couple of years ago, too. But my real problem is that the cylindrical area that the shaft rotates in is quite worn, allowing the whole thing to vibrate around. I end up making small shims and sticking them in under the shaft to take up the slack. Stays that way for half a year or so.
I also tapped that area and installed a grease fitting, so I can grease the area. Will no doubt have to switch out the inner primary someday, when the hole gets too big.
